The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce will hold its chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 21, and people have been eagerly anticipating the annual event, said Kerry Meyers, executive director of the Chamber.
"I started getting calls months ago, wondering if we had barbecue tickets yet," she stated. "People called the Chamber, and they called the library. They heard it sold out last year, and they wanted to be sure they got tickets."
The barbecue will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rear of the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. There will be options for drive-through or walk-up pickup. The meal will include a half-chicken from Peters' Barbecue, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a bottle of water. An option to purchase just a half-chicken and a bottle of water will also be offered.
Tickets are available for purchase at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St.; the Milanof-Schock Library; and the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., Suite 1. "Some Chamber members will have tickets for sale at their business," Meyers commented, adding the member will display a poster if tickets are for sale there.
Although meals may be available to purchase at the event, Meyers highly recommends purchasing tickets in advance, and she emphasized that prepurchased meals must be picked up by 1 p.m.
The chicken barbecue is the Chamber's major fundraiser, she said, noting that the organization is supported with no taxpayer dollars. She has set a fundraising goal of $14,000 for this year's event.
"Proceeds help to cover Chamber office and visitors' center expenses and fund our Music in Memorial Park series," she explained. "The barbecue also helps fund the visits with Santa that we do and the seven scholarships we offer to local students, totaling $4,500."
Sponsors help to cover the costs of the barbecue, including Giant Food Store in Mount Joy, which is the major event sponsor, and Thru-It-All Body Shop, which is the event sponsor.
Meyers stated that volunteers are needed to make the barbecue run smoothly, and this year, she has a special volunteer co-chair for the event - her granddaughter, Meg Zell, who will be a senior at Donegal High School in the fall.
"We are always looking for volunteers. If you like to get up early, you can help set up starting at 7:30 a.m., or we can use help with the assembly line, beginning around 9:30 a.m.," she said. Interested volunteers may call the Chamber office at 717-653-0773.
