PVHS Announces Graduation Speakers
When Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) holds its graduation ceremony at the school stadium at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, three seniors who volunteered to speak will be prepared to address their family, friends, and classmates, as well as school staff members. Emily Eby, daughter of Gloria and Calvin Eby of Gordonville; Joshua Hershey, son of Viviana and Dwayne Hershey of Paradise; and Kylie McGowan, daughter of Sheri and Chris McGowan of Gap, will be the orators. In addition, Class of 2022 president Emily Ammon, daughter of Deanna and Bruce Ammon of Gap, will have designated duties, including opening remarks and accepting diplomas on behalf of the class.
Eby has titled her speech "Changing Stories." "It's about the beauty of change and how, while (change is) difficult, out of that how beautiful our stories are," said Eby. After graduation, Eby plans to attend OneLife Institute, a gap-year Bible discipleship program in Morris. She said that she will recall her time at PVHS with gratitude. "The impact (PVHS) has had on my life was far greater than I could ever imagine," she noted. "I am very thankful for the staff and the people I have been blessed to get to know through the school."
Hershey called his speech "Keep Calm and Cycle On." "My speech is about cherishing the memories of high school, but moving on and seeking bigger and better things," said Hershey, who plans to major in mechanical engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in the fall. He said his time at PVHS has been enhanced by "teachers and faculty (who) supported me in my endeavors and were willing to challenge me to learn and grow as a person."
McGowan's speech is called "Shooting for the Stars." "It's about having a trajectory in life and knowing that if you don't find it right away, it's OK," said McGowan. "Life is a journey, and making the best and having a good outlook (means) accepting your path in life and enjoying it for what it is even if it's not what you expected." In the fall, McGowan will attend Delaware University to major in conservation and business. Her memories of PVHS focus on the communities present among the school's populace. "There are so many great communities within our school building," she said. "There's a place for everybody to feel accepted and loved and appreciated."
The ceremony will conclude with senior members of the school's Chamber Singers performing the alma mater.
