Children Gather For Reading Event

Pequea Valley School District (PV) hosted its third annual Read Under the Lights event on Sept. 26. This year, 188 children gathered under the stadium lights, which is a 64% increase from last year's attendance.

The idea for this event was born after three PV literacy staff members attended the 2017 Literacy Is for Life Conference in Hershey. The staff members said that after hearing of another Pennsylvania district that ran a similar initiative, they recognized the importance of family engagement through an event like this.

At Pequea Valley's Read Under the Lights event, participants visit stations where high school athletes read children's books to PV learners of elementary age and younger. The event represents a community effort, involving community businesses that donate giveaway drawing items, district employee volunteers, representation from the Pequea Valley Education Foundation and district administration, a visit from a therapy dog through the KPETS program, and collaboration with the athletic director and coaches of high school athletes.

Pequea Valley aims to provide exciting family engagement events like Read Under the Lights with the goals of helping families feel connected to the district, increasing families' love of reading, and promoting participation in an extracurricular activity such as a district sport.
