Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Lenten Study

Glen Moore United Methodist Church, 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, will host a Lenten study on Simon Peter at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, March 13 through April 17. Pastor John Neider and Henry Foehl will co-teach the study. Attendees will discover how they have special gifts, talents, and abilities that God can use to make a difference.

TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a weight-loss support group, will meet on Thursday, March 14, and every Thursday), at Tel Hai Retirement Community's Garrett Center in Honey Brook. Weigh-in is from 5:30 to 6 p.m., and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. The first meeting is free to guests. For information, contact Marcia at 484-238-4559.

Seniors Meeting

The Honey Brook Senior Citizens group will meet at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, 4331 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, on Thursday, March 14, at 11:30 a.m. The program will be "Games and Fellowship." All seniors are invited to attend and asked to bring a covered dish to share.

Good News Club

The Good News Club will meet on Thursday, March 14 (and every Thursday after school), at the Twin Valley Elementary Center, 50 Mast Drive, Elverson.

Children will be able to enjoy games, songs, Bible stories and Bible verses. The club is free, and all students are welcome.

Breakfast With The Bible

Alan Lindsay, senior warden of the Church of Saint Mary at Calvary in Elverson, will host Breakfast With the Bible on Friday, March 15, at 8:30 a.m. at the Morgantown Coffee House, 4997 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson.

Attendees should bring a Bible and may enjoy coffee, tea, and/or breakfast. The community is invited to participate.

Strollers Outing

The Berks Strollers will visit the Reading Museum, 500 Museum Road, Reading, on Saturday, March 16. The group will meet at 10 a.m. in the musuem parking lot. For more information, contact Angie, the hike leader, at 610-678-2618.

Classes At Joanna Furnace

Two hands-on programs for those interested in 19th-century history will be offered on Saturday, March 16, at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown

From 10 a.m. to noon, a 19th-century metal casting class will be offered. Instructors will demonstrate the process of creating a sand mold using a pattern. Participants will be able to take a casting home.

A candle-making workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. During the course, attendees will learn the process of rendering tallow, preparing wax and then making candles by dipping. Participants will create their own handmade candles to take home.

Irish Breakfast Buffet

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present its annual Irish breakfast buffet on Saturday, March 16, from 7 a.m. to noon at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown.

The breakfast will feature a menu of pancakes, French toast, country sausage, bacon, scrapple, creamed chipped beef, scrambled eggs, country-style potatoes, homemade corned beef hash, Irish soda bread, oven-baked oatmeal, fruit, coffee and juice.

Diners are encouraged to wear green to the event. While eating breakfast, they will be able to listen to traditional Irish music performed by Phyllis Hummel of Denver.

A fee will be charged for breakfast, and there will be separate prices for adults and for children ages 5 to 11. Children under age 5 may eat free of charge. No reservations are required.

Yoga, Line Dancing

Living God Lutheran Church (LGLC) will offer yoga classes and line dancing lessons on Sunday, March 17, at the church, located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. Activities are free, but attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Honey Brook and Twin Valley food pantries.

The beginner's yoga classes are being offered from 3 to 4 p.m. Attendees should wear appropriate exercise gear and bring their own mats. Country line dancing lessons are held from 6 to 8 p.m. Lessons are designed for beginners or novice dancers.

Chorus Open House

Ringing Hills Chorus invites women who love to sing to its open house on Tuesday, March 19, from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, 1188 Ben Franklin Highway East (Route 422), Douglassville.

Food Drive

Tel Hai Retirement Community invites the community to participate in the annual Tel Hai food drive being held through Friday, March 29, benefiting the Twin Valley Food Pantry in Morgantown and the Honey Brook Food Pantry in Honey Brook.

In conjunction with National Nutrition Month, Tel Hai is requesting the donation of non-perishable food items and supplies, including canned tuna, peanut butter, cereals, pasta, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, laundry detergent, dish soap, bar soap, paper towels and toilet paper. There is a specific urgent need for the following items: ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and large diapers for children, sizes four to six. Only non-expired, unopened items will be accepted.

Donations can be dropped off at the Garrett Community Center on the campus of Tel Hai, located at 1200 Tel Hai Circle, Honey Brook. For more information or directions, visit http://www.telhai.org.

Benefit Bingo

Tickets are available for designer bag bingo to be held on Sunday, March 31, at the Grill Fire Company, 739 Mountain View Road, Reading. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Pennsylvania. Tickets purchased in advance will be discounted; tickets will also be sold at the door.
