Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Movie Night

Phoenixville Public Library, 183 Second Ave., Phoenixville, will host Movie Night on Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. The library will screen "The Upside." Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman star in this comedy-drama about the relationship between a wealthy man with quadriplegia and an unemployed man with a criminal record who is hired to help him. It has a PG-13 rating.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Senior Center Event

The Coatesville Area Senior Center, 250 Martin Luther King. Jr. Blvd., Coatesville, will host a special day in memory of the 75th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday, June 6, featuring an exclusive screening at 10:45 a.m. of the film "Invisible Warriors: African American Women in World War II" by Professor Gregory S. Cooke.

Ruth Wilson, one of six living African American "Rosies" profiled in the film, will be in attendance. A special luncheon for Wilson, prepared by chef Chris Polling, will be featured at noon followed by a question-and-answer session with Cooke from 1 to 1:45 p.m. In addition, Sen. Andy Dinniman will present Wilson with a special citation at noon.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous will meet on Thursday, June 6 and every Thursday), at 6:30 p.m. at Thorndale United Methodist Church, 3503 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale. Meetings are held in the fellowship area.

YMCA Event

The Lionville Community YMCA is opening its doors to the community for a School's Out Celebration on Friday, June 7, from noon to 2 p.m. All are invited to join in the celebration at the Lionville Community YMCA, 100 Devon Drive, Exton. During the celebration, attendees can go for a swim, enjoy local food trucks, play on the inflatable obstacle course and more. All are welcome. Participants do not need to be a member of the YMCA to attend.

Support Group

An Al-Anon family group will meet on Friday, June 7 (and every Friday), at 8 p.m. at Marsh Creek Community Church, 101 Crump Road, Exton. (at the intersection of Whitford and Crump roads). Relatives and friends of those with a drinking problem are invited to attend.

Festival, 5K

To kick off the annual West Vincent Township Festival in the Park, the township will hold a Festival 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, June 8, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Gazebo at Andrew Evans Park, Chester Springs. Proceeds will benefit the township parks.

The run/walk will start on St. Matthew's Road and end in Andrew Evans Park, near the West Vincent Township Building on St. Matthew's Road and Route 401.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous will meet at St. James Episcopal Church located at 409 E. Lancaster Ave. (Route 30) Downingtown, on Saturday, June 8 (and every Saturday), at 6:30 p.m.

Evensong

The choirs of St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley, 2475 St. Peter's Road, Malvern, will present an Anglican service of Choral Evensong in the barn on Sunday, June 9, at 4 p.m. The choirs will perform music by Sir Charles Stanford, Howard Helvey and Vernon Williams, a local New Jersey resident. Support Group

Al-Anon, a support group for anyone who has been affected by another's drinking problem, will hold an open meeting on Monday, June 10 (and every Monday), at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Presbyterian Church, 100 W Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Downingtown.

Yoga Therapy Class

A free introduction to yoga therapy will be offered on Tuesday, June 11, at 7 p.m. at Downingtown Yoga, 116 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. Attendees will learn how yoga therapy unlocks their innate healing power. They will also be given an opportunity to observe a demonstration with a volunteer from the audience and learn about private yoga sessions.

Opera

Opera tutti! will present "The Old Maid and the Thief" at Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center on Sunday, June 16, at 2 p.m. Commissioned by NBC in 1939, it is one of the first operas composed specifically for radio broadcast and has become a comic opera classic. Written and performed entirely in English, Opera tutti! will adapt composer Gian Carlo Menotti's radio play to a fully-staged production on Uptown!s Main Stage.

Jewelry Repair

IGC Jewelers will be on hand at the Downingtown Area Senior Center (DASC) on Wednesday, June 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Folks are invited to bring their watch(es) and get a new battery, bring their jewelry to be cleaned, bring their gold or silver to sell or receive an appraisal.

DASC is located at Thorndale United Methodist Church, 3503 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale. Proceeds will benefit the DASC.
