Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Church Activities

The Mission Quilters group at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 107 S. 17th Ave., Coatesville, will meet on Thursday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. to create quilts that will be donated to Lutheran World Relief and distributed worldwide. Volunteers are invited to help tie the quilt layers together. No experience is needed.

In addition, the church's Prayer Shawl knitting group will meet on Tuesdays, Aug. 7 and Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. Ladies are invited to meet for fellowship and knitting.

Senior Center Events

The Coatesville Area Senior Center (CASC) has scheduled the following special activities for July.

A "Five Months to a Merry Christmas" celebration will be held on Friday, July 26, at 11 a.m. Attendees should arrive dressed in their best tropical outfits; prizes will be awarded The event will feature tree decorating, hot cocoa and holiday bingo.

A classic car show presented by the Classic Car Club of Chester County will be held in the parking lot on July 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CASC, which is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is located in the former CareerLink building at 250 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Harmony Street), Coatesville. Helicopter Landing

A restored Huey 823 Vietnam-era helicopter will fly in and land at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center's athletic field on Saturday, July 27. After landing the aircraft at 10:30 a.m., the helicopter will be on display from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., before lifting-off to return to the Lancaster Airport. The public is invited to attend.

The event is being hosted by the Liberty War Bird Association and the Coatesville VA Medical Center, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville.

Buffet Breakfast

Oxford United Methodist Church (UMC), 18 Addison St., Oxford, will host an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast on Saturday, July 27. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. The cost of breakfast will include buttermilk pancakes, French toast, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, sausage, bacon, oven-roasted potatoes, sausage gravy, and specialty breads.

Tickets will be available at the door and in advance by calling the church office at 610-932-9698. Individuals whose birthday is in July may show identification for a free breakfast ticket.

Wizard Faire

The second annual Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire, a fundraiser by the Atglen Public Library (APL), will take place on Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 121 W. Main St., Atglen. Activities will include bounce houses and water tunnels, crafts such as wand-making, face painting and "classes" in potions, herbology, care of magical creatures and divinations.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy various performances, including a magic show with Professor Snark and a program with live owls, as well as an escape room and a sale of food and beverages.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible school (VBS), themed "The Incredible Race" will be hosted at Oxford United Methodist Church, 18 Addison St., Oxford, from Sunday, July 28, to Thursday, Aug. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. VBS is for children from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Youngsters will discover they are all part of the same race - the human race - as they enjoy songs, crafts, games, snacks and dramas. They will also learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. At the end of each day, the youths will get a summary sheet to share what they have learned.

Family members and friends are encouraged to attend on Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. for a closing ceremony.

TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a nonprofit weight-loss support group, will meet on Tuesday, July 30, at the Oxford Senior Center, 12 Locust St., Oxford.

Weigh-in will be at 6 p.m.; the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. For more information, contact Joyce at 410-375-5629.

Double Feature

The Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host a double feature classic movie showing on Friday, Aug. 16. The first film will be shown from 1 to 3 p.m., with the second from 3 to 5 p.m.

The movies have a PG-13 rating and are not meant for family/children's viewing. The movies are meant for young adults and adults.

Attendees may bring snacks.
