Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Luncheon

Central Presbyterian Church, 100 W Uwchlan Ave., Downingtown, will hold its monthly Community Luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Chili, chicken corn noodle, vegetable beef, and cream of potato soups will be sold along with sandwiches, salad platters, homemade desserts and beverages. Gluten-free options will be available. For take-out service, call 610-269-1576 and ask for the kitchen. All are welcome.

Yoga Chanting

A free chanting group will be offered at Downingtown Yoga & Meditation Center on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 6:15 to 7:30 a.m. A short meditation and time for journaling will follow a chanting of Shree Guru Gita. This Sanskrit text, a section of the Skanda Purana, aims to offer participants a deeper inner experience in meditation.

"Matilda The Musical"

SALT Performing Arts will present "Matilda the Musical" at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Performances will be held on Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9:30 p.m.; and on Sundays, Dec. 8 and 15, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

"Christmas Live"

"Christmas Live," featuring a tree lighting, caroling and more, will be held at Cavalry Fellowship Church, 95 W. Devon Drive, Downingtown, on Friday, Dec. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Holiday Open House

The historic Welkinweir estate, headquarters of the Green Valleys Watershed Association, will open its doors to the public for a holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The estate house, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, will be decorated for the holidays by local garden clubs and horticulture students from Owen J. Roberts High School. There will also be seasonal music from the estate's restored Skinner pipe organ and light refreshments.

There is no fee, however donations will be accepted. Welkinweir is located at 1368 Prizer Road, near Pughtown, in East Nantmeal Township.

Holiday Concert

The Kennett Symphony will present "Pops Goes the Holiday" on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Rustin High School Auditorium, 1100 Shiloh Road, West Chester. Under the direction of music director Michael Hall, the concert will feature holiday favorites, an 85-member chorus from the Chester County Choral Society and a sing-along.

Surviving The Holidays

Surviving the Holidays, a seminar for those who have experienced grief and those who support them, will be offered by Hopewell United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at The Well, 107 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown.

The GriefShare seminar will help individuals learn how to deal with emotions faced during the holidays and what to do about traditions and other coming changes and provide helpful tips for getting through social events.

Craft Show

The second annual Chester County Guild of Craftsmen Winter Fine Craft Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Griffith Hall at Ludwigs Corner Fire Company, 1325 Pottstown Pike (Route 100), Glenmoore. The handmade work of 26 area artists will be featured. The admission fee includes a ticket for a prize drawing.

Live Nativity

The community is invited to attend a living Nativity event at Romansville United Methodist Church, 1859 W. Strasburg Road, Romansville, on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. During the drive-through event, visitors will meet Roman guards, see the angel hovering over the stable where Christ was born and watch the little angels and shepherds gathered around campfires. There will also be live animals.

Visitors will receive homemade cookies as a thank you for coming. The event is free.

Author Talk

Chester Springs Library will host local author Mary Cantell on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 1:30 p.m. She will discuss her books and how she became an author of wholesome romance and mystery. The library has a selection of her books to read ahead of the event, including "Beyond the Roses," "Untying the Shadows" and "Her Glass Heart."

Cookie Sale

The Wagontown Volunteer Fire Company, 412 W. King's Highway (Route 340), Coatesville, will hold its 15th annual Christmas cookie sale on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, beginning at 8 a.m.

Assorted party trays and individual cookies will be available for sale. Cookies will be homemade by residents of Wagontown and the surrounding communities. All proceeds will benefit the fire company.

Wreaths Across America

On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Wreaths Across America program will be held at local cemeteries to remember and honor veterans through the laying of remembrance wreaths on their graves.

Locally, the program will be held at the Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC) cemetery, 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, at 9 a.m.; at Hopewell UMC cemetery, 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown, at 11 a.m.; and Romansville UMC cemetery, 1859 West Strasburg Road, Coatesville, at 2 p.m.

Free Luncheon

Nantmeal United Methodist Church, 359 Nantmeal Road, Glenmoore, will offer its free community luncheon on Saturday, Dec. 14, from noon to 2 p.m. This month's meal will include chili, hot dogs, dessert and beverages. All are invited to enjoy good food and fellowship with their neighbors.

Cookie Walk

Always Franks Supporters (AFS) will host a Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Joseph School Hall, 404 Charles St., Coatesville. A fee will be charged per box of cookies. All cookies are homemade. All proceeds will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Breakfast Buffet

Episcopal Church of the Trinity, 323 Lincoln Highway, Coatesville, will hold a breakfast buffet on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 to 11 a.m. Children will also be able to enjoy a visit from Santa and a craft activity.

There will be separate ticket prices for adults, seniors and children ages 4 to 10. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free.

Breakfast With Santa

Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 107 S. 17th Ave., Coatesville, will offer Breakfast With Santa on Saturday, Dec. 21. Breakfast will begin at 9 a.m.; Santa will arrive at 10 a.m. Free photos will be offered, and all children will receive a gift.

Winter Solstice Program

The community is invited to celebrate the Winter Solstice on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Bondsville Mill Park in East Brandywine Township. The event will feature a hike in the dark and storytelling. Attendees will also learn more about the solstice. Families are welcome.

Free Christmas Dinner

A free Community Christmas Day Dinner will be offered at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC), 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown (Guthriesville area), at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25. The program is free and open to all.
