Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Blood Drive

Coventryville United Methodist Church, 1521 Old Ridge Road, Pottstown, will host a blood drive on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 7 p.m. Donors can register online at http://www.RedCrossBlood.org. Trail Hike

The Berks Community Strollers will hike the Schuylkill River Trail on Saturday, Feb. 1. The group will meet at 10 a.m. in Gibraltar in the parking lot across from Turkey Hill on Route 724 and Gibraltar Road. Community members are invited to participate.

The group will hike 3.5 miles in a loop from the Gibraltar parking lot, along the Schuylkill River Trail across Route 724 at Seyfert Road and then onto Old River Road. Participants will visit the Allegheny Aqueduct Historical Park before returning to the parking lot. For more information or directions, contact Kay, the hike leader, at 610-796-7602.

Dance Party

Youths with special needs are invited to enjoy an "Everybody In" dance party that will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester, on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 to 11 a.m.

It is not necessary to register for the events, and participants can attend as many dance parties as they choose.

All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hourlong session. Siblings are welcome. No snacks will be provided, so dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages.

Neighbors Meeting

Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a Christian women's fellowship group, will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 4, beginning at 9:15 a.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown.

Attendees will knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Community (MCC), a Christian relief agency that is celebrating its 100th year of service. The activity will be led by Carmen Weber. Completed comforters will be distributed by MCC to people in need throughout the world.

TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a nonprofit weight loss support group, will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at The Torch Community Center, located in the Clock Tower Plaza in Morgantown. Job Fair

A Census Taker Job Fair will be offered at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to7 p.m.

Free Dinner

Bird Count Seminar

Those who would like to take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) to be held from Friday, Feb. 14, through Monday, Feb. 17, are invited to learn about the event at a seminar to be offered at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road (Route 10), Honey Brook, on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m.

Registration is underway for the seminar. The snow date is Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.

Travelogue

The Kiwanis Club of New Holland will continue its travelogue series on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a presentation titled "Burma: Reflections on a Hidden Land." Produced by Sean Cassidy and hosted by Tom Sterling, the show will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland.

"Love Your Library"

A "Love Your Library" fundraiser will be held on Valentine's Day, Friday, Feb. 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Heatherwood Retirement Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The adults-only event is being planned by the Friends of the Honey Brook Library, and all proceeds will benefit the library's expansion and capital campaign.

Those who attend the event will enjoy appetizers and sweet treats, along with adult beverages. Non-alcoholic items will also be offered.

Tickets are available at the library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. Cash and checks will be accepted. A limited number of tickets will also be sold at the door.

Composting Class

The Chester County Board of Commissioners, through the Chester County Solid Waste Authority, will offer free certified master composting classes. Classes will take place at Exton Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, March 5, 12, and 26, on the second floor in the Struble Room.

Trainees will learn how to compost, how to construct various compost bins, how to grasscycle, and how to reduce food waste by vermicomposting. The authority will provide training, materials, volunteer opportunities, and support.

Participants are required to attend all three classes and complete six hours of volunteer service to be certified. Preregistration is required. To register or for more information, readers may call 484-796-4041.

Running Event

The Garden Spot Village Half Marathon/10K/Kids Half Marathon will take place in March. The half marathon and 10K will take place on Saturday, March 28, with a start time of 8 a.m. The Kids Half Marathon will take place on Friday, March 27, at 6 p.m.

Runners will have access to massages, changing tents, a locker room, showers, a heated pool, a hot tub, and a recovery tent with food. All runners will receive a T-shirt.
