Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Free Hot Meal

The Mission Committee of the Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3183 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, will serve a free hot meal from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Smith Fellowship Hall on Thursday, Jan. 30. The menu will feature hot dogs, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, peas and fruit cups.

Church Service

An Epiphany Taize-style service of worship and prayer will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1520 W. King's Highway, Gap, on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m.

All are welcome to attend the peaceful, contemplative, and informal time of prayer, inspirational Scripture, and uplifting songs.

Dance Party

Youths with special needs are invited to enjoy an "Everybody In" dance party that will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester, on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 to 11 a.m.

After the event on Jan. 18, the next dance will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1. It is not necessary to register for the events, and participants can attend as many dance parties as they choose.

All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hourlong session. Siblings are welcome. No snacks will be provided, so dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages.

Senior Center Activities

Coatesville Area Senior Center (CASC), 50 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Harmony Street), Coatesville, has planned several activities.

CASC has announced the opening of the "Nostalgia Kitchen," which offers weekly breakfast specials prepared by a new chef. A nominal fee is charged. The week of Monday, Feb. 3, will feature potato and onion frittatas.

As part of the Monday Matinee program, the movie, "Standing in the Shadow of Motown" will be shown at 1 p.m. on Feb. 3.

Seniors are invited to wear red and celebrate Heart Health Month with the Red Hat Ladies on Friday, Feb. 7. Participants will make red hats at 11 a.m. and have lunch at noon. A heart health talk will follow at 1 p.m.

A free walking club is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Pedometers, which are used to count steps, are provided.

Lifetree Cafe

Lifetree Cafe, located at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will host a program on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. Lifetree Cafe is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting.

The program is titled "When He Becomes She."

TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a nonprofit weight-loss support group, will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Oxford Senior Center, 12 Locust St., Oxford.

Weigh-in will be at 6 p.m.; the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. For more information, contact Joyce at 410-375-5629.

Chorus Seeks Members

The Lancaster AARP Chorus is seeking new members. The chorus was formed 39 years ago as a volunteer group of people who enjoy singing and visiting retirement centers and nursing homes to entertain the residents.

Alto, tenor, and bass singers are sought. Those who like to sing and/or who have sung in church choirs or with other groups are encouraged to join.

The chorus presents concerts in area retirement centers in May and December. It meets each Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Grace United Church of Christ, 1947 New Holland Pike (Route 23), Lancaster. Rehearsal for the May concert will start on Feb. 7.

Luncheon

The Lancaster County Newcomers and Neighbors club will hold a luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The program will feature Jeannie Hubbs, an educational interpreter.

Hubbs has more than 40 years of experience using sign language to help children who are deaf or hearing impaired. She will provide insight into sign language and her experiences with it. There is a fee to attend.

Tea For Women

Penn State Extension Master Gardeners will host a "Galentines" Day Tea and Succulent Charms event for women on Thursday, Feb. 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Market at Liberty Place, 148 W. State St., Kennett Square.

An informational talk on the care of succulents will be offered, followed by the chance to create a succulent charm to take home.

Composting Class

The Chester County Board of Commissioners, through the Chester County Solid Waste Authority, will offer free certified master composting classes. Classes will take place at Exton Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, March 5, 12, and 26, on the second floor in the Struble Room.

Trainees will learn how to compost, how to construct various compost bins, how to grasscycle, and how to reduce food waste by vermicomposting. The authority will provide training, materials, volunteer opportunities, and support.

Participants are required to attend all three classes and complete six hours of volunteer service to be certified. Preregistration is required. To register or for more information, call 484-796-4041
