Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

Job Fair

A Census Taker Job Fair will be offered at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to7 p.m.

Bird Count Seminar

Those who would like to take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) to be held from Friday, Feb. 14, through Monday, Feb. 17, are invited to learn about the event at a seminar to be offered at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road (Route 10), Honey Brook, on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. The snow date is Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.

Free Dinner

Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, 4331 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook, invites the public to enjoy free dinner and fellowship on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. as part of the Shepherd's Kitchen meal ministry.

Papermaking Workshop

A Valentine's papermaking workshop will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bingaman Nature Center 2843 Hill Road, Reading. The program is geared towards families with children age 5 and up.

Attendees will work together to use natural materials to create one-of-a-kind sheets or shapes of handmade paper just in time for Valentine's Day. A nominal fee will be charged per family; registration is required. To register, contact lgauker@countyofberks.com or 484-509-2667.

Travelogue

The Kiwanis Club of New Holland will continue its travelogue series on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a presentation titled "Burma: Reflections on a Hidden Land." Produced by Sean Cassidy and hosted by Tom Sterling, the show will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland.

Hikes

The Berks Community Strollers will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Redner's on Route 61 in Leesport and on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. in the Boscov's East parking lot. Group members will decide where to hike and choose a leader on-site.

Fire Tower Hike

The Elverson Walking Club will hold its annual Fire Tower Hike in French Creek State Park on Sunday, Feb. 9. The public is invited to participate.

The Fire Tower Hike is a 3-mile loop hike consisting of 2 miles to the tower, followed by an opportunity to toast marshmallows and hot dogs at the pavilion. Attendees should bring their own marshmallows and hot dogs.

Participants will meet hike leader Linda Godschall at the Fire Tower Road parking area at 1:30 p.m. The GPS address for the outing is 651 Fire Tower Road, Birdsboro. Pets are welcome.

Talks At Hopewell

The Friends of Hopewell Furnace will present "George Washington, a Man of Style" on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Hopewell Furnace conference center, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. Guest speaker will be archivist Donna McDermott.

A 1 p.m. on Feb. 9, part two of the film "In the Shadow of Liberty" will be shown. The film is about the discovery of James Oronoco Dexter's home. Dexter was a free African American coachman who lived in Colonial Philadelphia. Born a slave, he was one of the founding members of the first autonomous, black church in America.

Both programs are free, and refreshments will be served.

Neighbors Meeting

Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a Christian women's fellowship group, will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 11, beginning at 9:15 a.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. Guest speaker Lisa Betz will present "Using Minimalist Principles to Create a more Peaceful & Contented Home."

TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a nonprofit weight loss support group, will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at The Torch Community Center, located in the Clock Tower Plaza in Morgantown. "Love Your Library"

A "Love Your Library" fundraiser will be held on Valentine's Day, Friday, Feb. 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Heatherwood Retirement Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The adults-only event is being planned by the Friends of the Honey Brook Library, and all proceeds will benefit the library's expansion and capital campaign.

Those who attend the event will enjoy appetizers and sweet treats, along with adult beverages. Non-alcoholic items will also be offered.

Tickets are available at the library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. Cash and checks will be accepted. A limited number of tickets will also be sold at the door.

Valentines' Breakfast

Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works will host a Valentine's Day Breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 7 a.m. to noon. Vocalist Phyllis Hummel will perform in the dining area. The menu will include pancakes, waffles with fruit topping, chocolate-dipped strawberries and more.

Reservations are not required for breakfast. Tickets will be sold at the door. Children age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge.

Joanna Furnace is located just off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown. Attendees should enter the site via Furnace Road. Free parking will be available on-site. For more information, visit http://www.haycreek.org.

Dance Party

Youths with special needs are invited to enjoy an "Everybody In" dance party that will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, 490 W. Boot Road, West Chester, on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m.

All attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian who must stay with them during the hourlong session. Siblings are welcome. No snacks will be provided, so dancers are encouraged to bring bottled water or other beverages.
