Holiday Decorating Contest Announced
"Deck the Brook," a holiday decorating contest, is being presented by the Honey Brook Community Partnership (HBCP).
As part of the annual event, residences, businesses and organizations in Honey Brook Township and Honey Brook Borough are invited to decorate their property or doorway for any winter holiday of their choice, including Christmas and Hanukkah. A cash prize will be awarded to the winner in each category. Categories include Residential Door, Residential Yard/Lawn and Business Site.
Those who would like to enter the contest are asked to register in advance. Registration will open on Friday, Nov. 26, and continue through Wednesday, Dec. 8. Registration forms can be found at http://www.hbpartnership.org.
Registration forms should be dropped off by 5 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the Honey Brook Borough Hall, 71 Pequea Ave., Honey Brook, or at the Honey Brook Township Building, 500 Suplee Road, Honey Brook.
Registration forms may also be picked up and dropped off at the following Honey Brook locations: Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road; NovaCare Rehab, 1351 Walnut Road; Honey Brook Pharmacy, 35 Village Square; The Long Way Home, 4690 Horseshoe Pike; Brandywine Pharmacy, 2503 Conestoga Ave.; BB&T Bank, 4710 Horseshoe Pike; the office of Dr. Marsha Kirschner, 4660 Horseshoe Pike; M&T Bank, 4711 Horseshoe Pike; Knies Insurance Group, 4641 Horseshoe Pike; Eby's General Store, 3801 Horseshoe Pike; Suburban Brewing Company, 3041 Horseshoe Pike; Blue Marsh Insurance, 2501 Conestoga Ave.; Honeybrook Golf Club, 1422 Cambridge Road; and Honey Brook Early Learning Center, 1099 Maple St.
Voting will start on Thursday, Dec. 9, and continue through Saturday, Dec. 18. A cash prize will be awarded for the winner in each category. There will also be a Fan Favorite award, the winner of which will receive a gift basket with items donated by local businesses.
People will be able to visit the aforementioned website and find a list of participating homes and businesses. "That's the fun of it. It gives (people) the holiday spirit to drive around and look at the lights and the holiday displays," said HBCP member Verna Emery, one of the event organizers.
In the past, she noted, the contest involved only door decorating. The doors were judged by a committee from the partnership. For the past three years, though, the community has chosen the winners of the contest. "We wanted the community to be able to vote," Emery said. "We put in online voting, and I go around with boxes with voting forms to all the (previously listed) businesses so people can drop in their ballots."
She reported that last year's event was a great success. "We had 24 or 25 homes that registered, (and) we had almost 300 votes," Emery said.
The first-place winners for 2020 were Frank Fiorentino, Residential Yard/Lawn; Jessica Whichard, Residential Door; and Dr. Marsha Kirschner, Business Site. The Fan Favorite winner was the home of Joshua Millisock.
