Community REACH Slates Educational Programs

Community REACH Inc., 15 First Ave., Red Lion, is offering free programs designed for the community served by the Dallastown, Eastern, and Red Lion school districts. All sessions are free. On Monday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 3 p.m., instructor Lisa Barshinger, community and business development manager at First Capital Federal Credit Union, will present a program on the topic of checking accounts. A door prize will be provided. Registration is requested.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, representatives from Stewart Companies, Stewart and Tate, and Apple Automotive will share about employment opportunities during a walk-in format event. Attendees are welcome to use Community REACH's new PA CareerLink station while they wait to speak with human resources representative Michelle Cunningham. No registration is required for this event.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 10 to 11 a.m., Cindy Richard, director and founder of Suicide Prevention of York, will present a program on seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and depression. Registration is required. A door prize will be shared at this presentation.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., instructor Albert Storm will conduct the English language learning class. Small group and individual instruction is provided for English language learners of all levels. The class is always accepting new students, and registration is appreciated. A door prize is provided.

Also on Feb. 13, instructor Sam Neff will conduct the computers and technology class from 2 to 3 p.m. The class is for beginners and experienced users. Registration is required, and a door prize will be given.

On Friday, Feb. 14, from 10 to 11 a.m., instructor Jill Kaylor from Visiting Angels will present "Health Risks During the Winter Months." The presentation will address various challenges people face in winter and share recommendations for how to stay safe and healthy. Registration is requested. A door prize available.

Community REACH, in partnership with the York County Literacy Council, will offer free high school equivalency classes, beginning on Tuesday, March 3. Those who are interested in obtaining a high school equivalency diploma (formerly GED) may call Community REACH to register for the upcoming orientation sessions, which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 5 p.m. Attendance both days is required to begin the class. Classes will begin the following week and meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Tutoring will also be available on Thursdays from 1 to 2:15 p.m. All classes and materials are provided free of charge to those attending class.

In partnership with the Penn State Extension, Community REACH will host a series of cooking and nutrition classes on Wednesdays, Feb. 26 and March 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The instructor is Terri Rentzel, Penn State Extension's nutrition education adviser, and students will receive free lessons with fun activities as they learn how to eat healthy on a limited budget; cook low-cost, fast, and easy meals; and keep food safe to eat. They will also sample new healthy foods, receive weekly incentives, and earn a free slow cooker upon completion of the program. Participants may attend this free class if they are a parent or caregiver of a child under 20 years of age who qualifies for free or reduced school lunch, WIC, SNAP benefits, food pantry items, or Pennsylvania Farmers Market Vouchers.
