Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, will hold a program, "Lucy's Hair Work," in the cottage on Sunday, March 10, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
The workshop will focus on the Victorian-era tradition of making keepsakes from a loved one's hair, especially someone who had died. Participants will learn how to create a Victorian hair flower, which they may make into a pin or display in a glass or wooden box, which will be available for purchase. Participants may bring their own hair, or they may use some that will be provided. If participants bring hair, it must be at least 10 inches in length and the diameter of a pencil, and it must be placed in a resealable bag.
The workshop will be led by Civil War re-enactor Lucy Cadwallder from York County. While researching her hobby, she became interested in Victorian hair art and mourning customs. For 13 years, she has been perfecting the art of hair jewelry, which involves human hair intricately woven into bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces.
