On Saturday, July 31, more than cats will be purring at the Columbia Animal Shelter, when the shelter hosts the Cruisin' for Cats Car Show. The event will be held at the organization, 265 S. 10th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 1.
"Our goal is to have over 200 cars this year," said Tammy Loughlin, executive director of the shelter. "We have had cars come from all over, and this year, we've opened it up to mopeds, motorcycles, all types of cars and trucks. We even had an ambulance last year."
The car show will also feature a giveaway drawing and basket giveaway, along with music and food.
"It's a really fun day, and people have the chance to vote on a variety of categories like Best in Show or who's done the most work on their car," Loughlin stated. "It's just a really interesting thing to see, and it's fun to walk around and talk to the car owners and hear their stories. Some of these cars have been passed down from generation to generation."
This is the third year for the event, which benefits the cat-focused shelter. Proceeds from the car show are used to care for animals looking for a forever home.
"Right now, we are full. We have 120 cats and five dogs. We currently have a six-week waiting list for surrenders," Loughlin said, noting that proceeds will also help expand the spay and neuter clinic beyond its current one-day-a-week operation. "We are also starting to raise money for an X-ray unit."
She said Cruisin' for Cats offers a family-friendly day of entertainment. "Come out and see the cars, vote for your favorites and enjoy some food," she remarked. "It's just good, clean fun."
