For nearly three decades, the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy (VYIBA) in Lancaster has hosted annual productions of "The Nutcracker." Last year, however, VYIBA closed its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the public went without a show. This year, the academy is returning to live performances.
Two students from Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) study at VYIBA and will perform alongside professional dancers from the U.S., Japan, and Ukraine in the three upcoming showings of "The Nutcracker."
The classic holiday ballet will return to the Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Friday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2:30 p.m.
LSHS senior Elizabeth Stahovich, the daughter of Karen and Rich Stahovich, has been dancing in "The Nutcracker" for 13 years. In the Friday and Saturday evening shows, Elizabeth will perform the lead role of Clara. She will also dance en pointe in the snow scene and the waltz scene.
"I can't imagine my life without being a dancer," said Elizabeth. "I'm just very grateful to have this experience. I've been working up to this part, and it's great to finally be the person doing it."
At school, Elizabeth is the vice president of the Student Council, the president of the STEM Club, and a member of the National Honor Society, Asian Cultures Club, and Spanish Club. She also volunteers at Lancaster Science Factory.
LSHS freshman Gianna Fasano, the daughter of Amy and John Fasano, has been dancing in "The nutcracker" for eight years. Gianna will join Elizabeth en pointe in the snow scene and the waltz scene, and she will dance in the Russian scene.
"I've always wanted to dance at Viktor's studio, and it was one of my greatest decisions because he helps me appreciate dance, the arts, and music," stated Gianna. "I just love dancing."
At school, Gianna plays the flute in the marching band and is a member of the Pioneer Interact Club. She also has a deep interest in art.
"I'm looking forward to a live audience again," noted Elizabeth. "It's a great way to get into the holiday spirit and support the arts."
