The Dixie Kings will perform a concert of traditional New Orleans jazz at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. The concert is part of the church's 2019-20 Arts Alive cultural series.
The six-piece band has been playing vintage jazz for 20 years. The Dixie Kings got its start when the group's trumpeter, Stan Slotter, was asked if he could put together a Dixieland band for the famed Wayne concert series. Slotter called his friends who were well rounded musically and well versed in the traditional New Orleans sound. The performance was a success, and the Kings have been asked back to that series many times.
The group is co-led by pianist Dave Posmontier and Slotter. The vintage jazz classics played by the ensemble date back to the turn of the 20th century. Among the repertoire are several arrangements by noted bassist and band leader Ed Wise, a mainstay of the New Orleans music scene.
A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking and an elevator are available.
The Arts Alive season will continue at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, with the Mennonite Children's Choir of Lancaster, an ensemble of more than 100 members.
