EACTC Plans April Events

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and parents are encouraged to talk to their children about the effects of alcohol on their developing minds and bodies. Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC) has planned events throughout the month to engage adults and youths in the community.

As a follow-up to Red Ribbon Week in the fall, the Elizabethtown Area School District elementary schools are participating in a "Plant the Promise" contest. Students had planted 2,400 red tulip bulbs in the community, symbolizing their promise to stay drug free; those bulbs are blooming now.

The objective of the contest is to be the school that shares the most photos of students with the blooming bulbs or the "Plant the Promise" sign. The winning school's students will receive a prize and a new item for the CUBS room. Entries can be viewed on EACTC's Facebook page and at http://www.eactc.org.

At the secondary level, members of the EAHS PAWS ... and Think Club got together at a local business to create paintings with positive messages. The paintings will be on display at Twisted Easel, the Elizabethtown Public Library, and Hoss's Steak and Sea House through Monday, April 22, to draw attention to Alcohol Awareness Month. The PAWS...and Think Club spreads the word about the positive, healthy choices EAHS students are making in their lives.

In partnership with EACTC, the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., is featuring books on addiction and recovery on its "picket fence" shelves on the main floor all month. Materials and resources on the topic are also available on the shelving unit.

Sunday, April 21, is the national day for parents to have conversations with youths about alcohol. Throughout that weekend, local restaurants will pass out resources to customers. Resources for parents can also be found at http://www.KnowWhenKnowHow.org and http://www.MADD.org.
