Hempfield High School fine metals/glass instructor Amy Edwards was chosen to be part of the 40th annual "Contemporary Crafts" exhibit at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa, Ariz., beginning on Feb. 8.
Edwards' piece, titled "Si Eam Videris, Occidere; If You See It, Kill It," was also selected as a Juror's Award winner. Her handcrafted necklace depicts stages of the spotted lanternfly through hand-stitched embroidery, framed in copper settings. The concept behind Edwards' piece brings to light the environmental concerns surrounding the spotted lanternfly, an invasive species present in Lancaster County.
The "Contemporary Crafts" exhibition showcases contemporary crafts from across the country. Of the 214 pieces submitted this year, only 53 were chosen for the exhibit. These pieces were submitted by a total of 50 artists representing 13 states. Luiza deCamarg, associate curator at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, served as juror for the exhibition.
In addition to the exhibition in Arizona, Edwards has also been included in the national juried exhibition "Articulating Craft" in the Art Center Gallery at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.
