Through its Explore in the Classroom series, WITF was able to donate more than 3,000 books to area students during the 2018-19 school year. Three new, age-appropriate books were given to every kindergartner in the Harrisburg School District and to more than 320 kindergartners at four schools in York City School District. The plan is to continue to reach students in Harrisburg and York and, in 2020, the School District of Lancaster.
Explore in the Classroom is for kindergarten and first-grade students in underserved school districts. The three-part series uses different PBS characters, such as Curious George, Clifford, and Super Why, to engage children in literacy, science, and math experiences and gives each child books to take home.
The series is made possible by businesses that donate through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. WITF has again been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development as an Educational Improvement Organization (EIO), meaning that it is eligible to receive EITC contributions. Businesses that participate in EITC and would like to donate may contact Sarah Sheehan at sarah_sheehan@witf.org or 717-910-2866.
