Fair To Host Baking Contests

When people spend time at the 2021 Solanco Fair, they will notice a number of baked goods exhibited, all made by Pennsylvania residents. Four baking contests will return to the Solanco Fair this year - Apple Pie, Angel Food Cake, Chocolate Cake, and the youth-only Cookies, Brownies and Bars competition. The deadline to submit entries was Sept. 14.

The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest requires at least 60% of the pie filling to be apples, and the contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF).

PA's INCREDIBLE! Angel Food Cake contest is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania's Egg Farmers and the PSACF. These entries use Pennsylvania produced and packed eggs when possible.

The Homemade Chocolate Cake contest is sponsored by the PSACF. These layered chocolate cakes, made from scratch, are frosted with icing that has also been made from scratch. They all feature chocolate or cocoa as the main ingredient.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's PA Preferred program sponsors the Cookies, Brownies and Bars contest. The goal of this junior baking contest is to encourage young people across the commonwealth to participate in Pennsylvania's agricultural fairs by showcasing locally grown and produced products in their contest entries. These entries have been made by youths ages 8 to 18 and include two PA Preferred ingredients.

The certified winners of these contests will be eligible to participate in the state competitions at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January, where cash prizes will be awarded.
