First Friday Event Planned At Ware Center

The Arts at Millersville University will present an opening reception for "Portals III," an art exhibit of the works of Gail Gray, on First Friday, Jan. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Regitz Gallery at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, Jan. 27. Also on Jan. 7, in Steinman Hall, a companion live stage performance inspired by the "Portals" works will take place at 6:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public.

Over the past 10 years, Gray has created works of art that have been interpreted on stage as dance, drama, music, and interdisciplinary presentations by local performing artists. Gray's paintings projected behind the performances serve as the sets. The original concept was presented as "Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations" for the first three years. Later, "Portals" continued the concept using the artist's original paintings and/or their titles as inspiration for the performances. Performers for the Jan. 7 collaboration include Dominique Jordan Miller, Sophie Xiong, Ever Sandoval, Taska Ska Winyan, Solise White, Evita Colon, Disrupt Theater, Teatro Paloma, and others.

The stage performance will also be livestreamed for those interested in viewing from home. Details can be found at http://www.artsmu.com.

The live exhibit "Memories in the Crossroads" has been postponed. Created in partnership with the City of Lancaster, the exhibit was originally scheduled to be presented in the Binns Room for one night and to spotlight six families and cultural experiences with artifacts exhibited in a "Memory Room." In place of meeting in person, there will be a free, three-part Zoom presentation from 3 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 7. In the first part, family members from the various cultures will share their personal memorabilia related to themes such as community, service, fellowship, worship, and celebration. In part two, members of the Pennsylvania State Archive will share best practices in protecting and preserving family memorabilia. The third part will be an open question-and-answer session, with all participants and viewers invited to ask questions about various local cultures and the maintaining and safeguarding of family treasures.

Details for this presentation can be found on the aforementioned website.
