The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will offer a networking gathering for folk and traditional artists living and practicing in Cumberland, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Ave., Hershey.
The Folk Artists Gathering is intended for any artist working to sustain or advance an artistic tradition shaped and handed down within families, neighborhoods, and communities. Attendees may be those who play traditional music, sing in a church choir, make quilts, paint murals, tell stories or write poetry, cook recipes handed down from their grandparents, or perform dances specific to their culture.
The purpose of the gathering is for artists to meet each other, share resources and ideas, and talk about how the Susquehanna Folk Music Society might support them in the future. The event will be led by folklorist Amy Skillman. Skillman worked as Pennsylvania's state folklorist for over 30 years, managing the statewide folk arts infrastructure program for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and overseeing fieldwork around the state. She is now a part-time professor at Goucher College, where she is also the academic director for the master's program in cultural sustainability.
