Food Safety Courses Set

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified.

To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at locations across the state. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving the food, as well as properly sanitizing food service facilities.

After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years.

Penn State Extension will hold two ServSafe Food Safety Manager courses in January at the Lancaster Extension in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. An evening course will be held on Thursdays, Jan. 9 and 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. The certification exam will be administered on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is required for the evening course by Thursday, Jan. 2. A daytime course will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. The certification exam will be administered on Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration for the daytime course is required by Wednesday, Jan. 15.
