The Backyard Fruit Growers (BYFG) will offer winter workshops on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m., and the classes will include a morning session from 10 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session from 1 to 3 p.m. Participants may bring a bag lunch.
Among the morning classes will be "Planning an Apple Orchard," with Chris Manning, Alan Browne, and Chris Patterson. It will include a section on ladder safety. Additionally, Ted Weeden will present "Pawpaw, America's Forgotten Fruit," and Tina Ellor will discuss "Mushrooming in Southeastern PA."
Afternoon options will include "I Grew It - Now What Do I Do With It?" In this class, Agnes Mazur will speak about cooking and preserving the harvest. Other options will include "Backyard Food Forests for Conservation," with Ryan Davis, and "Basics of Successful Bramble Production," with Kathy Demchak. Steve Shambeda and Ken Kuzdro will present "Apple Pruning Basics" from 1 to 4:45 p.m. The class will be hands-on, and attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and bring pruning tools.
The BYFG is an informal grassroots organization dedicated to helping people grow their own fruit at home. The classes are open to the public.
