Dave Husser believes in helping others. "I have a motto: Life's about giving, not getting," said the president of Manheim Lions Club. He supports the Lions Club's mission of serving the community, and he invites the public to help give back by participating in a golf tournament to benefit both the Manheim and Palmyra Area Lions clubs. The event will be held on Saturday, June 4, at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee will include green fees, the use of a cart, prizes, a pig roast lunch and drinks.
Husser got the idea to organize the event as a joint project of the two clubs after having a conversation with Traci Petrino, president of the Palmyra Lions. "We realized that both of our clubs were small, so we thought, 'Let's get together and do something,'" he recalled. A golf tournament seemed like a natural fit, since Husser works at Iron Valley Golf Club. Proceeds from the event will benefit local projects in both Manheim and Palmyra as well as Beacon Lodge, located in Mount Union. The lodge provides all-expenses-paid camps for special needs children and adults and their families.
"All money we raise as Lions goes back into the community," Husser noted. "One hundred percent of it goes back, and each club can decide what the needs are in their community." In Manheim, the Lions support a Cub Scout troop and a baseball team, collect eyeglasses and provide funding for other projects as needed. "We want to help our community in any way that we can," Husser stated.
Prizes will be awarded at the golf tournament for the top four teams, along with closest to the pin, men's longest drive, women's longest drive, longest putt and more. Giveaways and gift baskets will also be featured. A discount will be offered per person for each group of four if registration is received by Thursday, March 31. Sponsorship opportunities are available for a variety of levels as well.
"The golf tournament will be a fun event for a good cause," Husser said. "And it's a great way to learn more about the Lions. We're always looking for new members. The Lions are a fun-filled group of people to be involved with, and it's a great way to get to know your community and to give back to your community."
