Group From Quebec Plans Concert

Sep 20, 2019 - 7:30 pm

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will present a concert by Genticorum on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Owen Salon at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

Having performed more than 1,000 concerts in more than 15 countries over the past 18 years, the Quebec trad group has been a fixture of the international world, trad, folk, and Celtic music circuit.

Firmly rooted in the traditions of its native land, the trio also incorporates North American and European folk cultures into its music. The group's sound weaves fiddle, flute, and accordion work, vocal harmonies, foot percussion, and guitar accompaniment.

Pascal Gemme is well known in Quebec's traditional music scene. Known as much for his original compositions as for his interpretation of traditional tunes, he is the band's fiddler, singer, and arranger, helping to produce six Genticorum CDs. From a young age, he was captivated by the fiddle music and songs of his native province. After graduating from Montreal's St. Laurent College with a degree in composition and band arrangements, he immersed himself in the traditional music around him, playing, collecting, and recording music found all over Quebec.

Guitar player Yann Falquet has explored many musical styles and completed a bachelor's degree in jazz. Since receiving his degree, he has developed a guitar style for Quebec folk music. He has recorded and toured with the Juno award-winning Celtic and world group The McDades, the Jean-François Belanger Trio, and cellist Natalie Haas.

Nicholas Williams is a musician in the traditional music scenes of Quebec and New England. His rhythmic style of flute playing draws from Irish and Scottish traditions, as well as from his studies of classical north Indian music. Also an accomplished accordionist and piano player, he has been a member of the band Crowfoot since 2005, and he plays with fiddler Laura Risk and in the Alex Kehler and Nicholas Williams duo.

Separate ticket prices have been set for general admission, for SFMS members, and for students ages 3 to 22. Advance tickets are available by calling the Ware Center Box Office at 717-871-7600. For more information, readers may visit http://www.sfmsfolk.org or call 717-745-6577.
