Have Fun For A Cause

What can organizations do to help families? For Solanco Family Life Network (SFLN), the answer became a partnership between schools, social services, churches, and community organizations. For the past six years, SFLN has served the Solanco School District by connecting families in need with resources that fill those needs. "A lot of people have needs and they're not sure where to go with that," explained Avery Hill, Solanco School District social worker and member of the SFLN planning team. "The network is a really great resource because it pulls all of us together, so when we meet a family with multidimensional needs, we can get all the needs met to tie things together for them faster." Currently, about 40 organizations within the community meet every month.

For the first time, SFLN will co-host a Family Fun Night with Black Rock Retreat (BRR). The event will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at BRR, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event will begin with a meal followed by a fun-filled evening of activities. Among the highlights will be door prizes, children's activities, and a resource table fair. There will also be four rounds of bingo, and the winner of each round will receive a themed gift basket. Also, at each resource table, attendees can collect tickets, which can then be used to enter drawings for prizes. Backpacks, a diaper and baby basket, kids' toys, gift certificates, and a self-pampering basket will be among the prizes.

"Despite all the chaos at the moment right now, we will still support families, and that will never change," said Hill. "We want to have a fun night where we can come together, show support as a community, and reach out to meet whatever needs we can."

SFLN is looking for donations that will be gifted at the event. Donation ideas include gift certificates, themed baskets, family gifts, or resources. Those interested in donating can contact Hill at avery_hill@solancosd.org or 717-786-0510 with a description of the item, which must be ready for pickup by Monday, Nov. 1.

"I think this is a very challenging time for a lot of communities, so I think having an event where we can focus on the strength of our community is huge right now," stated Hill.

Reservations for the Family Fun Night are strongly encouraged and should be made as soon as possible. Reservations can be made at https://bit.ly/3iI5SNy. To learn more about SFLN, visit http://www.solancofamily.com.
