Several hundred business, health care and community leaders from across the Harrisburg area came together at the annual Capital Region Heart Ball on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Hershey Lodge. The event raised more than $270,000 for the American Heart Association, which focuses on heart and brain health.
The theme was "Black Tie and Semper Fi." Local meteorologist Tom Russell hosted the event.
Organizers and event chair Michael Gossert, vice president of Quandel Construction Group Inc., dedicated this year's Heart Ball and Open Your Heart appeal to longtime Heart Ball supporter and former Quandel Construction president John Koury who passed away of a sudden heart attack at age 55 in June 2018. His wife, Cheryl, shared their story and her mission to ensure more people are trained in CPR.
The event also included a silent and live auction, a heart-healthy dinner and entertainment by That Band. The gala opened with the presentation of the colors by Cumberland Valley High School JROTC and the national anthem sung by Messiah College freshman Olivia Shields.
Funds raised from the Capital Region Heart Ball will support the distribution of CPR Anytime training kits in the community and the American Heart Association's mission for longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in research.
