Historical Society Sets Program

The Elizabethtown Historical Society, 57 S. Poplar St., has announced a special event on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.

Daryl Hilsher from Longenecker's Hatchery will share with historical society members and guests the history of the hatchery.

Clayton M. Longenecker began Longenecker's Hatchery in 1918 from a location on Bainbridge Street. In 1920, he purchased property on South Market Street at Ridge Road and erected a modern hatchery building on it. Longenecker specialized in Baron Single Comb White Leghorns. In the 1920s, chicks were hatched only in the spring and early summer and shipped to customers in many eastern states.

Hilsher will explain the growth of the industry and how hatcheries have evolved over the decades. The hatchery is located today at 1110 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.
