History Center Plans Programs

York County History Center will offer a variety of programs and events to the community. Events will take place at the Colonial Complex, 157 W. Market St., York, and are free to the public, unless otherwise noted. For more details, readers may visit http://www.yorkhistorycenter.org under Events.

A First Friday event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2. The event will feature a tavern tasting, s'mores treats, and yard games.

Summer Family Maker Series: Point and Shoot Photography will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 3. Satoko Berg, local photographer, will lead a class on the basics of photography followed by a walk around York to practice newly learned skills. Participants must bring a point-and-shoot camera or phone with a camera function. The program is open to individuals age 8 and up. There is a nominal fee for nonmembers.

A Second Saturday program, A York County Doughboy, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market St., York. Jeff Holder, re-enactor and history teacher, will share details and stories of what it meant to be a doughboy and what life was like for servicemen in the American Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front in World War I.

Summer Family Maker Series: Quilling will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, 217 W. Princess St., York. Participants age 6 and older will learn the basic forms and begin a project. There is a nominal fee for nonmembers.

The York Civil War Roundtable will meet at the Historical Society Museum on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. Richard Lewis will present "Cloaked in Mystery: The Curious Case of the Confederate Coat." Membership is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about the American Civil War.

York Fest will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25. On Aug. 24, activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Aug. 25, the event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Art lessons at the Colonial Courthouse will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. Some fees will apply.

The South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society will meet at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Historical Society Museum. Bart Stump will present "Revolutionary Rarity: Continental Currency Printed in York."

ALLVETS will host an oral history program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Historical Society Museum. Joe Bosley, a Vietnam veteran, will share his story and experiences.
