Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, has posted several upcoming events.
A worship service will be held on Maundy Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. The service will focus on Jesus' command to love one another. After Holy Communion, the service will culminate in darkness.
All are invited to join in a meditation, The Stations of the Cross, on Good Friday, April 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. A guide booklet with Scriptures and meditations will be provided.
A Way of the Cross prayer service will take place on April 19, at 3 p.m. The Way of the Cross is a devotional service adapted from a custom observed by Christian pilgrims who said prayers in Jerusalem at locations in the city associated with the Passion of Jesus. The service at Zion Lutheran Church will include a procession that moves through a series of stations within the church, with pictorial representation of the event being remembered. Scripture readings, song, and prayer will be shared at each station. All are welcome to attend.
Holocaust survivor David Wisnia and his grandson, singer-songwriter Avi Wisnia, will share about the Holocaust through story and song on Sunday, May 5, at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
David, a cantor, is a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was incarcerated for close to three years. He preserved his own life by singing to entertain the Nazi SS and cell block leaders. David was transferred to Dachau in December 1944. After surviving the Death March and managing to escape, he was found and rescued by the American 101 Airborne Division. Joining with the 506th Parachute Infantry, he engaged actively in combat during the closing days of the war with Germany in 1945, becoming both a survivor and a liberator.
