Members of the Shiloh Lions Club will welcome area youths at the 12th annual Hoops for Sight fundraiser on Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church of the Open Door, 8 Carlisle Court, York.
For some of these participants, such as Patrick Budelis, the fundraising effort is personal. Patrick has Stargardt disease, a degenerative retinal disease. Recently, his family heard about CRISPR, a gene editing tool that has been discussed in scientific journals. The Budelis family learned that CRISPR has been injected directly into a patient's eye in an attempt to reverse vision loss, and the family is interested in finding out if this process might also help Patrick's vision.
Patrick's work with the Hoops for Sight fundraiser has helped to provide more than $12,000 for researching the disease that threatens his sight. This year will be his fourth time participating in Hoops for Sight.
Participants in the event secure pledges and then attempt to make foul shots at the event. The Lions will present gift cards as prizes for the most foul shots made in all age categories as well as gift cards for pledges brought to the event. The Lions will also conduct a giveaway drawing on the day of the event, with more than 40 prizes available. Hot dogs and baked goods will be available for purchase.
Anyone who is interested in participating in Hoops for Sight either as a competitor or as an event sponsor may contact Lee Woodmansee at wendelllee@aol.com or 717-764-1964.
