International Overdose Awareness Day will be celebrated all over the world on Monday, Aug. 31. Its purposes are to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died from a drug overdose and to reduce the stigma of a drug-related death.
The Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, a program of Hospice & Community Care, will host a virtual program to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. The program is open to anyone regardless of whether their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care.
The virtual program will be held via Zoom on Aug. 31 from 7 to 8 p.m. and will feature keynote speaker Dr. Mitchell Crawford, who will share his personal story about the death of his younger sister due to a heroin overdose. Crawford will also discuss his current position as the director of addiction services for WellSpan Philhaven.
During the keynote address, Pathways Center grief counselors will virtually meet with children ages 5 to 13 to make a commemorative tile. Supplies for the craft activity must be picked up by Friday, Aug. 28, at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
There is no cost to participate in the Overdose Awareness Day, but registration is required. To register, readers may visit http://www.hospicecommunity.org/oad or call the Pathways Center at 717-391-2413.
