Jigger Day Event Scheduled

Jun 09, 2019 - 3:00 pm

Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., Ephrata, will host its annual Jigger Day festival on Sunday, June 9.

From 3 to 5 p.m., ice cream sundaes and refreshments such as iced tea and lemonade will be served.

With Irish and other Celtic music, and Irish step-dancing, the Celtic Martins will provide the entertainment at 5 p.m. The group got its start when Nelson and Elaine Martin included music in the homeschool curriculum for their six children. The group, which began performing as the Martin Family Band 15 years ago, also performed at Jigger Day in 2017.

Admission to the festival is free, and there is no charge for the refreshments, but donations to the Eicher Arts Center will be accepted.

The Eicher group launched in the 1980s to help save two historic structures. The group began sponsoring an annual series of cultural and entertainment events at the Eicher House, naming the June event after the jigger-style sundaes that were popular in the mid-20th century at a pharmacy soda fountain in Ephrata. "Jigger" was short for "thingamajig."
