The Arts at Millersville has announced upcoming activities at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, in celebration of Juneteenth.
Imani Edu-Tainers will host its 25th annual concert, "The Calabash: The African Gourd," on Saturday, June 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.artsmu.com.
A Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Sunday, June 19, from 12:30 to 5 p.m. in Steinman Hall. Free tickets are available at the aforementioned website.
Among the activities on June 19 will be a Mommy/Dad and Me dance class from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. This activity will provide parents and children with cultural learning experiences using West African dance.
Visitors may meet artist Gracie Berry from 1:30 to 2 p.m. The Ware Center is currently displaying Berry's exhibit "Shadowkeepers & Roothealers: The Original OG's," which pays homage to and is an Afro-futurist altar to three of the eldest Orisha gods from the Yoruba religion in West Africa.
A virtual lecture about Yoruba culture will be presented by professor Oloye Karade via Zoom from 2:15 to 3 p.m. The program will include a 10-minute question-and-answer session.
During "It's a Wrap" from 3:15 to 4 p.m., attendees will learn how to wrap a tradition African gele (head tie) and ero (wrapped skirt). Each attendee will receive two yards of traditional African fabric. Registration is limited to 15 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Participants in "Say It With a Symbol" from 3:15 to 4 p.m. will use West African Adinkra symbols and mask stencils to design a T-shirt. Registration is limited to 15 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Imani staff members will offer "Let's Dance" community dance classes from 4 to 5 p.m.
