In non-league action Saturday, Sept. 11, the Pioneers dominated Berks Catholic with better opportunities but offsides calls thwarted many attempts. In the long run, it came down extra minutes. Freshman Chloe Bucher took a through ball from Karli Brenneman and beat the keeper with a shot to the left side of the goal for the game-winner.
"I was not sure what to expect but 0-0 after 80 minutes was not at all my expectation," said head coach Emily Lebo. "They played a great off-side trap and we struggled to overcome it, however we were relentless and finally put one in.
"I have high hopes for this team," she continued. "So many things have been turned upside down over the past year and a half and we are all just appreciating the opportunity to play a full season together."
The Pioneers picked up its second league win of the season with Monday's 1-0 battle over Manheim Central and grabbed a third straight shutout with Wednesday's 7-0 thrashing of McCaskey. Goal scorers were unavailable at press time.
CROSS COUNTRY
Manheim Central, Donegal, Annville-Cleona and L-S, all with undefeated records, met in Lampeter last Tuesday for an opportunity to remain perfect on the year. Despite A-C, L-S and Donegal's top runners earning the top three places, it was Manheim that swept the competition.
L-S topped the Dutchmen 27-32 but lost 25-30 to the Indians and 26-29 to the Barons.
"The girls knew it would be tough and they gave their best effort," said assistant coach Calvin Esh.
Molly Wissler, running fourth for L-S, passed Manheim's fifth runner in the last quarter mile to keep things interesting. Jaclyn Martin (2nd), Aubrey Magagna (7th), and Morgan Wright (13th) led the hosts with Keira Smecker (18th), Abby Welchans (19th) and Jocelyn Wolff (20th) placing in the top 20.
The boys' team moved to 5-0 with three easy wins, handling A-C 16-43, Donegal 19-41, and Manheim 15-49 with five runners in the top seven.
Colin Whitaker (16:26) and Parker Stoner (16:53) went 1-2 with Adrian Elia and Ben Devine close behind in fourth and fifth. David Pritchard (8th) and Luka Vranich (9th) cracked the top ten.
FOOTBALL
Jonathan Mellinger scored a pair of touchdowns and the Pioneer defense worked a shutout for the second week in a row as L-S earned a 19-0, Lampeter Bowl victory at Conestoga Valley Sept. 10.
"I was surprised with a shutout," said head coach Victor Ridenour. "They have a talented offense, great skill kids and their o-line is big and athletic. Creating turnovers on defense was huge for us," he added. "It gave our offense opportunities. We still need to be more complete on offense and finish drives."
After a scoreless first quarter, Mellinger's one-yard plunge with 1:22 remaining in the half, put L-S on the board. A blocked PAT left L-S in front 6-0.
Defensive highlights included Landon Coronado's sack and interceptions from Berkeley Wagner (87 rushing yards), Giovanni Malatesta (77 rushing yards) and Beau Heyser (2 receptions for 52 yards). DelGrande, Luke Hines and Jackson Heeter combined for 25 tackles.
Neither team found the end zone in the third frame either, but the visitors finally got some momentum in the fourth with Payton Cunningham's 3-yard run. The two-point run was denied but Mellinger's one-yard spurt, with 5:12 left to play, and Brayden Smith's PAT kick made it a 13-point fourth quarter.
TENNIS
The tennis team ran its winning streak to four straight matches with a squeaker over Catholic (4-3) Sept. 10 but then suffered their second loss of the season, 5-2, over visiting Elizabethtown last Monday.
Laura Leaman and Kati Platt (8-0) and Maddie Snyder and Katie Finn (8-4) gave L-S a 2-1 lead heading into singles play against the Crusaders while Kylie Gerhardt (6-2, 6-0) and Platt (7-6, 6-2) provided the winning singles points at No. 2 and 4 respectively.
Kylie and sister Ryan Gerhardt (8-5) and Snyder and Finn (8-4) secured doubles wins to put L-S on the board.
Wednesday the girls handled Manheim Central 5-2. Up 2-1 after doubles, R. Gerhardt earned a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win at No. 1 singles while K. Gerhardt and Platt (7-6, 7-3) won in straight sets.
The Gerhardt's, at first doubles, and Lindsey Steele and Snyder, playing No. 3, both won 8-4.
GOLF
The golf team collected four more wins last Wednesday, improving to 16-0. Their 315 total was 17 strokes better than Cocalico, who finished second. Matt Wilson's 73 was the low score at Foxchase. Ben Wilson (77), Gehrig Harsh (81) and Jason Long (84) kept the competition at bay.
FIELD HOCKEY
Head coach Katrina Swarr's inexperienced field hockey team is off to a 0-3 start, but she is confident they will turn things around.
"We need to quickly learn to trust each other and play together," the coach said. "Our corners look good; we just need to penetrate the circle on offense. Kara Scranton and Maggie Swarr are combining nicely and Marissa Rice and Troi Heiserman are working hard on offense. It will come."
After scoring in each of their first two games, the Pioneers were shut out 4-0 against Manheim Township on Sept. 10.
The Pioneers, in their second OT game of the season, picked up a 2-1 win at Ephrata last Monday night. Rice knotted the score in the first period while Rowan Kimmel, assisted by Kieva Middleton, scored the game-winner at the 8:50 mark of OT. Brooke Zuber recorded 10 saves in the 'W'.
L-S earned its second section win and first shutout last Wednesday, blanking E-town 4-0. After a scoreless first, Heiserman put the offense on her shoulders and ran, notching a hat trick with goals in the second, third and fourth quarters. Rice also scored while Lindi Wall and Kimmel earned assists.
VOLLEYBALL
They volleyball team fell to 1-1 in section play with a 3-1 loss at Garden Spot Sept. 9. Spot pulled out a 25-21 first set win only to see L-S come back strong, taking set two 25-15. But the Spartans rode Julia Ellsworth's 19 kills to take the third and fourth sets, 25-15, 25-17.
Emily Mullin was tops for L-S with 13 kills. Chloe Nolt added two aces. Hannah Williams put up eight assists and Jenna Hoover recorded a pair of blocks.
L-S rebounded with a tight 3-set win (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) at Solanco Tuesday. Williams served up five aces and handed out 10 assists and Grace Schonour put down four kills to charge the offense. Alexis Moran added five blocks and both Brooke Smith and Jenna Hoover added two digs.
