Lady Warriors Boot PM Comets 4-1

Starting the week off on the right foot, the girls' soccer team posted a 4-1 victory over Penn Manor last Monday, but then dropped two razor thin decisions to close it out, falling 2-1 in overtime against Conestoga Valley and then 1-0 to Ephrata on Saturday. Warwick (1-2, 2-4) landed in fourth place in Section One as a result.

Aubrey Williamson racked up two goals and an assist against Penn Manor while Kendall Morgan turned away five of the Comet's shots in goal. Williamson struck the first blow of the game in the 22nd minute and landed the final one as well, scoring her second in the 76th bookending goals by Jess Williamson (25:00) and Caroline Hipple (29:00).

The Comets pressured on offense, peppering Morgan with six shots on the day, but Warwick offered a bit more, firing off 10 against a tandem of Penn Manor keepers in Miriam Badri and Brooke Hinkle. Lily Sugra netted the lone goal for the Comets just before the final horn sounded.

Julliette Delmotte's goal in the 70th minute of play knotted the score at 1-1 against Conestoga Valley on Thursday, sending the game into overtime where CV's Delainey Varela-Keen dealt the final blow when she scored in the final minute of the period.

Adrienna Neiman (9:00) put Conestoga Valley on the board with a goal early in the first half while Morgan saved four and the Warrior offense offered up six of its own with two corner kick opportunities.

The ladies played over 70 minutes of scoreless soccer against Ephrata before Reagan McCarty (71:00) blasted home the deciding goal for the Mounts. It was only the second shot of the game for Ephrata while Warwick doubled them up with four, all of which were stopped by Jocelyn Umana.

FOOTBALL

Heading into Friday's matchup with Hempfield on the road, Warwick was looking to continue its high-powered offensive attack and the Warriors did just that, beating the Black Knights 55-7 to stay undefeated in a crowded Section One. Warwick (1-0, 4-0) joins Cedar Crest, Manheim Township, and Wilson all of which have yet to lose after the first four weeks of the season.

The Black Knights appeared to be in the driver's seat after Tanner Hess rumbled for a 68-yard score on just the third play of Hempfield's opening drive, but it was all Warwick after that. Joey McCracken completed 18 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns, 137 of them to Conor Adams who caught three of those for scores, while Colton Miller carried 15 times for 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors racked up 441 yards of total offense.

Following Hempfield's initial touchdown, Warwick scored eight times including an interception by Justin Gerhart that he took to the house from 30-yards out near the end of the half to give the Warriors a commanding 34-7 lead at the break. Both Miller and Adams scored twice before that with Adams, and Caleb Schmitz (6-98, TD) catching one more apiece and Christian Royer (4-61, TD) rushing for a 53-yard score as well.

BOYS' SOCCER

Despite dropping their first game of the week 3-2 to Penn Manor, the Warwick boys remained focused and rebounded with a 3-2 overtime win against Conestoga Valley as well as a 2-0 blanking of Ephrata. With those results, Warwick (1-1, 3-1-1) trailed only Elizabethtown (2-0, 5-2) and the Mounts (2-0, 3-2-1) who were tied for first place in Section One.

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead over the Comets last Monday on Broden Price's first half goal at the 5:56 mark of play but Penn Manor responded with three unanswered scores to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Warwick's second goal of the game came from Drew Schwartz at 55:58 to cut the deficit in half, but the offense was not able to manufacture the tying score.

Out shot by the Comets 10-5, Boston Libhart made seven saves in the net for Warwick which fired off five against Shane Tappany who was able to stop three.

Trailing Conestoga Valley 2-1 late in the second half on Thursday, the Warriors got a lift from Jacob Smith who scored the tying goal in the 64th minute and then came through with the win on his second score of the night in the 88th minute.

The teams traded goals up to that point with Kyle Thrush (39:00) giving the Buckskins a 1-0 lead which carried through into the second half until Kole Blauch tied it for Warwick in the 49th minute. Owen Linder connected a little over four minutes later allowing CV to retake the lead before Smith came through for the Warriors.

Schwartz provided Warwick with its first goal of the game against Ephrata on Saturday when he connected on a corner kick in the 10th minute to make it 1-0. That score stood until Ryan Ciano sent the insurance shot home in the 70th minute as Libhart, who had four saves on the day, and the rest of the Warwick defense put the clamps on the Mounts. Offensively, Warwick took nine corner kicks and had 14 shots on goal while Ephrata only had two corners and four shots which were all turned away by Libhart.

TENNIS

The Warwick girls continued to find traction on the season as they have only one win on their record to date. Last week proved difficult again for the Warriors as they lost 7-0 to Conestoga Valley on Monday and 6-1 to Penn Manor on Wednesday.

Versus Conestoga Valley, the girls won six games total, all in doubles, with Aysia Weiler and Ann Barney putting up an 8-4 score at number one and Audrey Hovan and Danin Myers posting an 8-2 result.

Against the Comets it was Barney preventing the shutout with a 6-3 win at No. 4.

VOLLEYBALL

At 1-4 and sitting in fifth place in Section One, the lady Warriors were looking to get into the win column once again last week but came up short in their efforts with 3-0 losses to both Cedar Crest and Hempfield.

After losing the first set of the match versus the Falcons, Warwick battled back in games two and three for very competitive 25-23 results in both despite the loss. Both Lauren Lefever and Libby Smith had five kills and three aces apiece while Gwen Meyer posted three aces along with 17 digs and Allison Forsythe assisted on eight.

Traveling to Hempfield on Thursday proved much tougher as the undefeated Black Knights won handily, 25-3, 25-15, and 25-16. In that match Lefever had four kills, Shannon Morrisey had six assists, Forsythe aced two serves, and Meyer recorded 14 digs.

FIELD HOCKEY

It was a good week for Warwick (3-1, 4-2) as the Warriors maintained second place in Section One behind Conestoga Valley (4-0, 6-1) and Penn Manor (4-0, 6-2) by posting two league victories. The lady Warriors began with a 7-1 win over Cedar Crest at home on Monday and followed up with a 4-2 defeat of Ephrata on the road on Wednesday.

Warwick benefitted from a four-goal performance by Emily Behn against the Falcons as she recorded her first goal 7:40 into the first half and sent the other three into the back of the cage in the second. Leanna Strouse gave Warwick its second score of the game when she sent her first of two banging off the back board at the 23:35 mark to head into the break ahead 2-1.

Sarah VanScoten extended the Warwick lead to 3-1 when she beat Amanda Wildonger 9:30 into the second half and then it was all Behn as she drove the score up for the final tally of 7-1. Julia Healy recorded three saves for Warwick while the offense out muscled the Falcons with a 20-2 advantage on penalty corners and 22-5 in shots on goal.

Trailing 1-0 after Ephrata's Halee Deemer hit the go-ahead goal at 17:06 of the first half, Warwick responded with three unanswered scores stretching into the second half to make it 3-1 before Mallory Kline halved the deficit 23 minutes in, making it 3-2. However, Strouse closed the door on any type of comeback with a goal at 25:24 and the defense clamped down for the remainder of the game.

Lamya Mejias connected on two goals for Warwick and Meghan Quinn added another as the Warriors out shot Ephrata 16-7 with a 10-9 advantage in corners. Healy turned away four in the cage while her counterpart Annika Galen stopped nine for the Mounts.
