LancasterHistory will offer a virtual lecture on Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m. during which Johns Hopkins University's Martha S. Jones will discuss her book "Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America."
"Birthright Citizens" tells the story of how African American activists were involved at legislatures, conventions, and courthouses, contending that birth in the U.S. guaranteed their rights. In her presentation, with fresh archival sources and a reframing of constitutional law-making before the Civil War, Jones will speak about how the Fourteenth Amendment constitutionalized the birthright principle.
Jones, Ph.D., is the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University and co-president of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians.
This event will take place via Zoom, and attendance in person will not be available. The program is free and open to the public, but it requires advance registration at https://bit.ly/rhc21apr15. The link to the Zoom event will be emailed automatically upon successful registration.
