The Austin L. Grove American Legion Post 403 Americanism Committee is accepting applications for the 49th Pennsylvania State Police Youth Week (SPYW) program through Friday, May 3, or until all 100 SPYW seats are filled across Pennsylvania. SPYW is co-sponsored by the American Legion, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania National Guard.
SPYW will again be held on the campus of York College of Pennsylvania from Sunday, June 9, through Saturday, June 15. The six-day camp is for male and female students ages 15 to 18 prior to attending who are interested in entering a career in law enforcement or a branch of the armed forces. Cadets march in platoon formation and participate in drill competitions. The curriculum includes physical training, as well as instruction and familiarization in forensics, canines, crime codes, Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), rock climbing, drug laws, radar, weapons, and marksmanship. Applicants must be physically fit and in good health, and they will have to submit a medical form signed by a physician. They should also have a good academic record. SPYW is not a recreational camp.
Applications must be mailed to Austin L. Grove American Legion Post 403, Attn: Americanism Committee, 4035 Manchester St., Glen Rock, PA 17327-8945. After receipt, applications will be reviewed and prospective cadets will be contacted for interviews. Depending on the number of applicants, interviews will be scheduled on Saturdays, May 4 and 11, by the Post 403 commander to select Post 403's SPYW candidates and alternates.
