Less Stuff, Less Stress!

Columbia Public Library To Host Decluttering Workshop

Kala Denlinger has always been a tidy person by nature, but it was not until a few years ago when more and more friends started asking for her help with home organization projects that she considered turning her penchant for organizing into a business. In 2019, Denlinger launched Simply D-Cluttered, offering her skills as a decluttering coach to anyone who may benefit from help as they attempt to get the spaces in their home or business in order.

"People know how to tidy up, but it's overwhelming to start and that's often where I come in," shared Denlinger, who resides in Mount Joy. "It's sort of like with physical fitness: It's not necessarily about not knowing how to do it. We all just need guidance sometimes in certain areas of our lives."

On Thursday, Feb. 20, the community is invited to join Denlinger for "Simply Declutter," a fun night of organizational motivation and tips, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia. The workshop is free, and no registration is necessary.

Denlinger will share some of the road blocks that prevent people from decluttering their homes and spaces. She will also discuss solutions and practical tips for moving past those obstacles.

Finding or prioritizing the time to declutter is a common issue for people, along with dealing with emotional attachments to items. "I have people start by focusing on one room at a time and taking a room-by-room approach," said Denlinger. "You can't transform it all overnight." She explained that taking small steps tends to yield greater success versus attempting to tackle everything in one fell swoop.

But what about the person who may not see the need to declutter or the value in getting rid of excess? "Less stuff, less stress," emphasized Denlinger. "When you have a lot around you, it means you have a lot to do, whether that's dusting or maintenance or whatever it may be ... and once it's gone, it's a huge relief off your back."

"Life is stressful enough; we don't need anything extra weighing us down," added Denlinger.
