Libraries Expand Online Services

York County Libraries (YCL) member libraries are expanding delivery of online library services to meet the needs of community members while physical locations remain closed. Consistent with Gov. Wolf's directive to close kindergarten through 12th-grade schools indefinitely, the Office of Commonwealth Libraries has instructed all Pennsylvania libraries to stay closed until further notice.

All physical library materials currently checked out through YCL libraries have been renewed until May 27, and no fines will be assessed during the time of closure. Members are asked to hold onto borrowed materials and book donations until the libraries reopen.

Library staff members are working remotely to ensure that York County residents have access to the library services they need through http://www.yorklibraries.org and social media. New books are being added weekly to YCL's digital collection on Axis 360, which offers over 28,000 e-books and audiobooks for loan. There are titles suitable for people of all ages.

An additional service, Hoopla, provides instant access to over 58,000 movies, music recordings, comics, books, and audiobooks through the library website or Hoopla App. All Items on Axis 360 and Hoopla are available for free digital checkout with a YCL card.

Community members without a library card are invited to request one online at the aforementioned website. The card is free.

Year-round, libraries offer extensive databases and resources for school projects, research, and personal learning. With community members looking for interesting things to do at home, information services professionals created the YCL @Home Brain Bonanza. The first session kicked off on the website news blog with five questions about the theme "Notorious Fools." This is a challenge that can be done as a group, individually, or among family members to see who can find the answers the fastest. New questions will be posted weekly.

Youth services staff members are launching digital story times at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays on the "York County Libraries" Facebook page. Storytellers will share books, finger plays, songs, and more. Each week's story times will also be posted on the YCL News blog at the previously mentioned website.
