Library To Celebrate Anniversary

Jun 08, 2019 - 1:00 pm

The Lititz Public Library's Kissel Hill location will turn 20 years old this year. On Saturday, June 8, the community is invited to attend a day of celebration of the library's 20th anniversary. All events will be held rain or shine at the library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.

Starting at 10 a.m. and running until noon, the library will have special free activities for children of all ages. Children are invited to write or draw a message to the library with chalk on the sidewalks and play with bubbles. In addition, balloon art will be created and shared with children by Majik Andrew Entertainment. There will also be face painting and free popcorn and lemonade.

At noon, there will be a special opening of the library's time capsule. The time capsule was given to the library in August 1999 by Abby Schreiter as part of a Girl Scout Cadet Silver Award project. Attendees at the 20th anniversary celebration will open the time capsule to see what was placed in it in 1999 and then fill it with a new set of memorable items from 2019 to be resealed for another 20 years.

Throughout the afternoon, a special photography display will be available for viewing. The display will detail the library's history and show how far the library has come as a community hub. The display will be available for viewing until 2:30 p.m.

The Moonlighters Big Band will play a concert from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the library's community room. The Moonlighters Big Band is based in Lititz. Most band members are from Lititz and the surrounding communities and range in age from their 20s to their 80s. The ensemble's library includes tunes from the great big band leaders of the 1930s, 1940s, and other eras, such as Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Les Brown, Harry James, and others. The group has adopted Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" as its signature theme song. Concert space is limited, so interested attendees should preregister for the concert by stopping by the library, calling the library at 717-626-2255, or emailing their name and number of people attending to register@lititzlibrary.org.

The day before the anniversary celebration will also feature a special event at the library, as Hank the Health Hero and his friend will visit the library to read a special book about healthy habits on Friday, June 7, at 10 a.m. Geared for children age 7 and under, the program will also include a craft. Interested participants should sign up at the library or call 717-626-2255 to register.
