Library Sets Programs

The Roaming Readers Walking Club will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from Oct. 2 to 30 at 9 a.m. After meeting outside in front of the library, the group will walk around the library neighborhood and talk about books for 30 minutes. Preregistration is requested.

The Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County will present "Facts You May Not Have Known About the Apollo Program and Apollo 11" on Wednesday Oct. 2, at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to discover the true story behind the Apollo Program and Apollo 11. The program is free and open to the public.

On Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m., the Lititz Garden Club will host Barbara Baker, retired Lancaster County recycling coordinator from Lancaster County Solid Waste Management, who will present "Composting - The Art of the Peel." Baker has been a Master Gardener for six years. Attendees will learn the value of composting, the basics of what is needed to make compost, the various methods of making compost, and uses for compost. Knitting Club will meet on Mondays, Oct. 7 and 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. The program is not a class or instruction time, but a friendly gathering where people work on knitting projects. Attendees must bring their own supplies. Crocheters are also welcome.

Brooke S. Petersen, CFP investment consultant, will present a financial wellness class at the library on Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. The class will teach the basics of managing finances, with topics including Basic Budget, Types of Savings, Retirement Savings, College Savings, Expense Management, Debt Management, Insurance, Insights, and Creating a Plan of Action. Light refreshments will be served, and prizes will be awarded. Petersen is an investment consultant specializing in asset management and financial planning for individuals and families. Preregistration is requested.

The Painting Club will meet on Wednesdays, Oct. 9 and 23, at 12:30 p.m. Attendees should bring their own painting supplies. The group usually meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month to paint and socialize.

The Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in foreign affairs are invited to join this moderated, nonpartisan discussion group.

The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. Bradley Gottfried will present a program about the Point Lookout Prison and Hammond General Hospital.

Scrabble Meet-Ups, for which attendees are asked to bring their own boards, will take place on Monday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The History Book Club will meet on Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss "Post War: A History of Europe Since 1945" by Tony Judd.

The Jane Austen Society will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to enjoy a cup of tea and discuss all things Austen.

The Genealogy Club will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will get tips for researching their family tree.

A concert by The Knotwork Band will take place on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. The trio of musicians performs traditional and modern Celtic folk music. The band takes its name from Celtic knotwork, where cords or lines are woven into intricate patterns and highly stylized designs. The concert is sponsored by BB&T.

The inaugural Oehme Performance Series will feature Neill Hartley presenting "Sherlock Holmes and the Speckled Band" on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1:30 p.m. Hartley will portray detective Sherlock Holmes in a version of the famous short story by Arthur Conan Doyle. Preregistration is requested, and registration will open on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

"Is My Kid Dyslexic?" will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. Certified dyslexia practitioners Lauren Maffett and Dr. Rachel Moore, both parents of dyslexic children and the founders of Lancaster Reading Solutions, will share simple ways parents can see if their child fits the dyslexic profile. They will also share options for further evaluation and how parents can help their child. Preregistration is required.

Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Counseling Sessions will be offered on Friday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Readers may call the Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717-299-7979 or 800-801-3070 or email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us to schedule an appointment. The Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period for 2019 will be from Tuesday, Oct. 15, to Saturday, Dec. 7, during which APPRISE, a free health insurance counseling program for Pennsylvanians with Medicare, will have unbiased counselors available for free.

Buckhill Sleuths Book Club - Lititz Location will meet on Monday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. The group will discuss "Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore" by Matthew Sullivan.

The Lititz Art Association will host Vitaly B. presenting "Online Selling" on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Kilene Knitter, Giant Food Stores nutritionist, will offer free children's cooking classes, which will provide youngsters with basic skills needed to create a balanced snack. Mini Chef Creations, geared toward children age 5 and under, will be offered on Friday, Oct. 4, at 10 a.m., and Junior Chef Creations, geared toward 6- to 9-year-olds, has been set for Monday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. Space is limited for both classes, and registration is required.

Sharky's Storytime will be presented by Wheatland FCU on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. In the financial literacy story time, Wheatland's mascot, Sharky, and his handler will read "Berenstain Bears Dollars and Sense" by Stan and Jan Berenstain. The program is geared toward children ages 6 to 9. Preregistration is requested.

During the October Family Story Time on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m., families are invited to hear the 2019 Read for the Record book, "Thank You, Omu!" by Oge Mora. The story time will include stories, songs, and activities focused on soup. Canned soup donations will be accepted for the Lititz Warwick Community Chest. Children of all ages and abilities are welcome with an adult. Registration will begin on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Cruise Into Kindergarten, geared toward children ages 3 to 6, is set for Monday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. The Pennsylvania early literacy program is based on the national Every Child Ready to Read program. After hearing a story, children and their caregivers will visit different stations that will help with skills needed to start school. The program will be held monthly.
