Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, has posted its upcoming programming. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are free and require preregistration. The library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2. Beginning on Friday, Sept. 6, the library will be closed on Fridays. Saturday hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until next summer.
A suicide awareness event featuring a moderated forum will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. The Mental Health Association of Lancaster, Center for Grief and Loss, and Compeer will discuss the impact of suicide and how to help, including becoming more aware of the signs and resources to provide support. A question-and-answer session will follow. A candlelight vigil at the library's flagpole will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. Registration is requested.
The library will hold a drop-in Pleased to Meet You! open house on Friday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon. Visitors are invited to see what the library has to offer, check out library items, and use the public computers. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, so individuals are encouraged to obtain a free library card.
Sing, Shake, and Sway Story Time, set for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 4 and 18, and Thursdays, Sept. 5 and 19, will encourage children to interact and move to songs and stories.
Family Story Time will be offered on Monday, Sept. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Maytown, and on Monday, Sept. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the former First National Bank building, 100 Market St., Marietta. It will also be offered on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 11 and 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the library. Families may enjoy stories, songs, and a craft based on a theme of the week.
During Preschool Super Science on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m., preschoolers age 3 and up can engage in science-based activities that teach them about the world around them.
Lego Club, for people of all ages, will take place at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10. Legos will be provided.
A homeschool art class, set for Monday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m., invites children age 7 and up to create theme-inspired art based upon the works of a particular artist.
Fun Family Bingo has been set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Sensory Story Time will be offered on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 10:30 a.m. The 30-minute interactive program is geared toward children ages 3 to 5 who are differently abled, who may be on the autism spectrum, who have sensory processing issues, or who feel overwhelmed by noises or crowds. A 30-minute time of monitored social play will be available afterward. Registration is required, and space is limited.
Sing and Sign Story Time, during which basic American Sign Language is incorporated, will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 25 and 26.
During Teen Anime on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m., teenagers age 13 and up may socialize with other anime-lovers, watch shows, and plan anime-based activities.
Closely Knit, a group for avid knitters or those who aspire to knit, will meet at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 and 23. Attendees may knit or crochet individual projects, and no registration is necessary.
The Friends group will meet on Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. New members are always welcome.
The Needle Felting Friends Club, led by local soft sculpture artist Victoria Hans, will meet on Sept. 11 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. People who want to learn the art of needle felting, along with needle-felters who would like to share ideas or work in a social setting, are welcome. Learners need to bring their own basic supplies.
The book discussion group focused on the classics will discuss "The English Patient" by Michael Ondaatje on Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m. The Lit Lovers book discussion group will discuss "Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It" by Gina Kolata on Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Joyful Stitchers Cross-Stitch Club typically meets from 10 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of each month; however, this month the group will meet from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Sept. 21. All stitchers, from beginners to the ultra-experienced stitchers, can bring their supplies. Those who are new to the hobby can obtain a simple cross-stitch kit at a local craft store, and one of the experienced club members will provide assistance.
All writers, whether recreational or professional, are welcome to work on their current projects or write to prompts by facilitator Ingrid Andersen during the Writers' Circle at 6 p.m. on Sept. 23.
Make-It Monday, set for Sept. 23 at 6 p.m., will focus on "Knit, Don't Quit!" Barb Zercher will teach basic knitting skills, and participants will start a simple clutch bag to take with them to finish on their own. The class is free, and materials will be provided. Class size is limited to six participants, and registration is required.
