It is not too late for patrons of all ages to take part in the Summer Reading Program at the Chester Springs Library. This year's theme is "A Universe of Stories."
Participants will be asked to keep track of their reading activities in order to earn chances for an end-of-summer prize drawing. For children, prizes will include a snow cone machine, a Magic Rocks crystal growing kit and a Marvel comics trading card set. Prizes for teenagers will include a sketch book and colored pencil set and bath bombs. Adult prizes will include a pass for four to Longwood Gardens and two complimentary tickets to a show at SALT Performing Arts.
Young children up to age 5, as well as school-age students ages 6 to 11, will be asked to fill out a summer reading coupon every time they read for two hours. Adults may read to children or siblings may read to each other.
Youths age 12 through those who will be high school seniors in fall may fill out a teen summer reading coupon every time they read 300 minutes (five hours) of age-level appropriate books. Adults age 18 and over will receive a ticket for a prize for writing a book review for a book they have read.
"(Patrons) give me the coupons, and they will get a ticket for the prize drawing," explained library director Nancy Niggel. She noted that more than 30 prizes will be awarded and that more prize donations are expected.
Coupons for children and teenagers, adult book review forms and a complete list of prizes are available at the library and at http://www.chesterspringslibrary.org/summer-reading.
All tickets must be turned in by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. "I will pull the names that evening," Niggel said, explaining that winners will be announced on Wednesday, Aug. 14, between 1 and 3 p.m. "People can come into the library and see if they won a prize," she added. Ice cream sundaes will be served that day.
The library is seeking additional prizes to distribute in August. Those who would like to donate an item such as a gift card may email Niggel at nniggel@ccls.org. Also needed are smaller prizes, which will be placed into gift baskets.
In addition to the reading incentive program, children may take part in Patch Power Summer Quest 2019. Children may earn various patches, such as "Globetrotter" and "Epic Wizard." Preschoolers through teenagers are invited to pick a patch they wish to earn. By participating in various activities, participants can earn stamps toward their patches.
For example, to earn an "Interstellar Seeker" patch, students will be asked to read a nonfiction book about space or a biography of an astronaut. Activities for young children include listening to an adult read a book about space.
Stamps can also be earned by attending programs at participating libraries in Chester County offering the Patch Power Summer Quest Program. The librarian at the program site can stamp the back of the requirement card. "They must complete three activities and attend one program," Niggel said. "(Selected) programs on our calendar have a Patch program key. For example, the Mad Chef tortilla-making program on July 10 can go for the 'Mad Chef' or 'Globetrotter' badge," she said.
Complete details about the program can be found at the previously mentioned website.
Special activities for people of all ages, including story times, movie screenings, craft classes and more, will be held at the Chester Springs Library in July. A complete list of activities is available at http://www.chesterspringslibrary.org.
