The Summer Reading Program, "A Universe of Stories," will begin on Saturday, June 1. The program will offer four age levels of involvement: the Read Aloud Program for children birth through age 4, the Junior Program for children ages 5 to 9, the Tween Program for youths ages 10 to 12, and the Teen Program for teenagers ages 13 to 19 years. Participants may pick up forms at the library and log their reading over the summer. Completed forms should be returned by Saturday, Aug. 10, and prizes will be available starting on Monday, June 17, for participants who have reached set participation levels.
In addition, the library will offer Summer Fitness Quest 2019, a Get Outside physical activity program. The library will have Summer Fitness Quest booklets available to extend children's learning and help them develop an appreciation for the outdoors. The program will provide free opportunities for children and adults to visit Lancaster County parks and trails, as well as Lancaster Conservancy Nature Preserves. This program is intended for children ages 5 to 9.
The Summer Reading Program Kickoff: 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Blast Off! will take place on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, June 5, at 10 a.m. The kickoff events will be story times featuring stories, songs, activities, and a craft related to outer space. Children of all ages and abilities are welcome with an adult.
The library's 20th Anniversary Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 8. The event will feature children's activities from 10 a.m. to noon, a community celebration from noon to 2:30 p.m., and a concert by the Moonlighters Big Band from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Seating is limited for the concert.
The Jane Austen Society of Lancaster County will hold a fundraiser to benefit the library on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include a silent auction. Tea, punch and savory treats will be available for purchase.
Knitting Club will meet on Mondays, June 3 and 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. The program is not a class or instruction time, but a friendly gathering where people work on knitting projects. Attendees must bring their own supplies. Crocheters are also welcome.
The Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County will host an open mic night for members on Wednesday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m.
Yoga at the Library will take place on Monday, June 10, at 10 a.m. Weather permitting, the class will be held outdoors on the library grounds. The class is appropriate for adults and teenagers of all abilities. Participants may bring a mat if they have one and a water bottle. Some mats will be available to borrow.
Scrabble Meet-Ups, for which attendees are asked to bring their own boards, will take place on Monday, June 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 25, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Painting Club will only meet on Wednesday, June 12, at 12:30 p.m. Attendees should bring their own painting supplies.
The Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in foreign affairs are invited to join this moderated, nonpartisan discussion group.
The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. Katie Thompson will present "The Flying Dutchmen."
The Jane Austen Society will meet on Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to enjoy a cup of tea and discuss all things Austen.
The Lititz Art Association will meet on Tuesday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. Carol Colestock will present "Graphic Portraits."
Story Time With Hank for children age 7 and under will be offered on Friday, June 7, at 10 a.m. Hank and his friend will read a special book about healthy habits, and children may make a craft. Space is limited. CHI St. Joseph Children's Health will present the event.
Family Stages will present That Fabulous Franklin - A Celebration of Imagination! for children age 5 and up on Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. It will feature the wit and wisdom of Ben Franklin.
Book Buddies for children age 3 to 8 will meet on Tuesdays, June 18 and 25, at 10 a.m. Participants will hear a story as a large group, then read with their buddies and make a craft together. American Legion Garden Spot Post 56 will sponsor the event.
Lancaster Science Factory will present Think Like an Engineer for children ages 3 to 8 on Wednesday, June 19, at 1 p.m. Participants will be presented with multiple design and building problems to solve.
Magician Mike Rose will present Magic That Came From Outer Space for children of all ages on Thursday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m. Rose will present magic and comedy, and children will have opportunities to become part of the show. Throughout the program, Rose will reference various children's books and promote library use.
Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friends Reptile Sanctuary will present Rocketing Reptiles for children age 5 and up on Monday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will discover reptiles' mission on Earth.
Phredd, the Ukelele One-Man Band, will perform for children of all ages on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m.
Making Space for Pollinators for children age 5 and up will be offered on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. The program will feature important critters that help pollinate orchards, backyards, and rain forests. Children will also create a pollinator T-shirt. Participants should bring a white or light-colored T-shirt.
Bravura Brass will perform for children and families on Thursday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m.
Freaky Friday! for children of all ages will take place on Friday, June 28, at 1 p.m. Activities will include a story based on this month's theme, crafts, games, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities.
