On Sept. 14, Quarryville Library celebrated the success of STEM Saturdays by awarding certificates of participation and appreciation to students and volunteers. Refreshments followed with a cupcakes shaped liked an atom. Prior to the celebration, students built catapults to test how energy is transferred to objects by launching marshmallows into boxes surrounded by castle walls.
The 9-month science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program for 8- to 12-year-old students was made possible through donations for science kits by Agilent Technologies and locally by the Wakefield Lions Club. The program covered a range hands-on STEM activities related to topics such as electricity, general science, forensics, solar energy, electromagnetism and earth sciences.
As an Agilent retiree and a local volunteer, Bob Lydum planned and implemented the program with assistance from librarian assistant Janee Anastasio. Prior to his retirement, Lydum implemented after-school STEM programs throughout the mid-Atlantic region for Agilent. Volunteers who assisted with the program included David Hileman, Theresa McGinley, Amy Rineer, Stacy Shelton, Julia Anastasio, and Evan King.
