Lions Club Posts Activities

The Willow Street Lions Club, now in its 76th year, has announced its recent and upcoming activities.

The club celebrated its 75th anniversary in March after the event was delayed for a year due to COVID restrictions. The club received a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, presented by Rep. Keith J. Greiner of the 43rd District at the Charter Night celebration held at Fireside Tavern.

Earlier in March, club members attended the district convention held at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center in Willow Street. In April, first district governor-elect Mike Schaeffer attended a club meeting to speak about his time working on Kentucky tornado relief efforts in Mayfield, Ky., in January. Members of other area clubs and the general public joined the Willow Street Lions for the program. The club also recently hosted an egg hunt, including a visit from the Easter Bunny.

The club will hold its spring chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kendig Square by the former Kmart. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, coleslaw, a drink and dessert. Half-chickens will also be available. For advance tickets, call 717-464-7176. Food will also be available to purchase at the event on a first-come, first-served basis. Proceeds will go toward two $1,000 scholarships that will be given to graduating seniors at Lampeter-Strasburg High School.

In the spring and fall, members of the public can keep an eye out for club members taking part in the semiannual roadside cleanup along Beaver Valley Pike early on Saturday mornings. Other upcoming events include the annual Family Picnic in June, which is open to anyone interested in learning more about the club, and a paint night on a date to be announced. The Lions club's meetings are open to all community members. The Lions also have a medical equipment loan program that allows people to donate and borrow select medical equipment; for more information, call the aforementioned number.
