Nancy Bieber, a local writer, spiritual director and retired psychologist, will present a program, "The Faithful Life of Fianna Bucher Meyer," in the sanctuary at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. The program is part of the church's 125th anniversary year events. The public is invited to attend.
Bieber will share the adventure of learning about her grandmother Fianna Bucher Meyer through letters that had been hidden in an attic for many years. In her recently published book, "Fianna's Story: A True Story of Love, Grief and Faith," Bieber presents her grandmother as a devout Brethren woman in the early 1900s. Meyer, at age 10, was among the first people to be baptized in the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, and she retained her faith until her death at age 28. She was survived by her husband and two small children. Meyer also left behind a large packet of letters describing the life of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren and life in her home, as well as her experiences as an early student at Elizabethtown College and as a patient in a tuberculosis sanatorium.
