Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will sponsor a variety of programs and activities in December. Programs are free and open to the public. Pre-K Meet-Up will meet on Tuesdays, Dec. 3, 17, and 31, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The program will offer children ages 3 to 5 and their parents an opportunity to play in the Early Literacy Lab and meet other children, parents, and caregivers. Older and younger siblings are welcome.
Young and the Restless will take place on Wednesdays, Dec. 4 and 11, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program is open to toddlers accompanied by an adult. Children will build literacy skills while having fun with books, rhymes, felt boards, puppets, dancing, and crafts.
Several story time programs will be available. Baby's First Story Time, designed for children from birth to age 17 months, will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 11. Sing! Sign! Story Time! will be held on Friday, Dec. 6, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. for children from birth to age 6, and will feature stories and songs to teach basic American Sign Language (ASL) baby signs to children and their grown-ups, a few signs at a time. Wee Readers, a story time for young children and their caregivers, will meet from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Fridays, Dec. 13 and 27, and will include a mix of stories, crafts, songs, and fun.
Study-Skills Builders will be offered from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Dec. 5 and 19, to offer children assistance on practicing comprehension strategies and thinking skills and working on math facts mastery and reading fluency. Participants will read books using a dictionary and thesaurus and play games with words and math facts. Each session will have a variety of activities, so different needs and interests will be met. This program is best suited to 8- to 10-year-olds. Space is limited, and walk-ins will be accepted only if space allows.
Family Movie Night will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and include a free movie and popcorn in a family-friendly atmosphere. Movies will be rated G or PG.
The Anime Club will gather at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, and people age 13 and older are invited to attend. Participants will watch anime, eat snacks, and socialize. Content will be PG, PG-13 or TV-14.
Children age 3 and older with a caregiver will be offered an opportunity to decorate their own gingerbread house on Saturday, Dec. 7. Sessions will begin at 10 and 11 a.m. and noon. Registration will close on Dec. 4, and space is limited. Participants are asked to bring one bag of candy per family to contribute to the decor options pile. Some pre-assembled houses will be available for younger children.
The Coder Dojo Group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. The computer programming club is open to youths ages 7 to 17. Participants may bring their own technology device or borrow a laptop from the library. Preregistration is necessary for this program.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Teen Dungeons and Dragons group will meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. for teenagers ages 12 to 19. A Teen Leadership meeting will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., and teenagers will plan, promote, and manage programming for children and teenagers. Snacks will be provided.
The Toddler Meet-Up will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The casual meet-up for parents with toddlers will take place in the Early Literacy Lab to play. The program is best for children ages 1 to 3, but older siblings are welcome to attend.
The Lego Design Team will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 19 to build creations that will be displayed on the library's social media. The program is best suited for children age 5 and older, but all children are welcome to participate. Children under age 3 should be monitored closely by an adult caregiver.
On Monday, Dec. 23, the Bookmobile will make a stop at The Pleasant Valley Store, 420 Sproul Road, Kirkwood. For directions, readers may call 717-529-3964. The Bookmobile visits on the fourth Monday of every month.
Parachute Games will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, Children ages 3 to 6 will enjoy songs, rhymes, and games. An adult caregiver must accompany each child.
At 6 p.m. on Dec. 26, Snap Circuits will offer beginner electronics programming. Participants will learn fundamental physical principles such as polarity, contact, current, series vs. parallel and short circuits, while snapping together experiments that buzz, whistle, flash, fly, and more.
